My personal tips

Recommended Posts

I just thought I'd share what I personally do in DayZ.

First and foremost, trial and error will be your best teacher.

I've spent hours searching forums and blogs for tips on ways to better myself on DayZ, and the tips made sense, but they never really worked for me. Dying is the only thing that will help you achieve skill. If you're just starting, take it easy, sneak (as in crawl or crouch-walk) in towns and cities so you can get to the major buildings like the market or hospital. Once you've snuck around enough and you know the towns pretty well, you can start a faster way of looting - my personal favorite.

My preferred way of looting

If it's a town I know well, (Berezino, Chernogorsk, Elektro, etc.) then I will just charge in through a town. I'll keep some level of sneaking, like running on sidewalks and in grass - don't run on streets. Ever. - and just sprinting to the buildings with good loot. You will most definitely get aggro, but if you detour just a teeny bit, you can lose them pretty easily. And by the time you're fully looted and leaving town, you should have maybe 1 or 2 zeds that are really craving some of your face, so just cap them in the head when you're a ways out of town. It's really easy once you get the town's layout down.

Learn to scan loot by look

After enough looting, you'll be able to identify loot by looking, so you can run into a room, look at that little pile of crap on the ground, and be out in a second. The only thing I look for when looting are those little pouches. Most tools are in pouches, and you never want to miss out on a map or compass.

Never forget about your bag

The first 3 or so days of playing, I neglected and forgot about my backpack. You can store many goodies in them, and they're very useful.

Can't really think of anything else currently, since I'm really tired...

Feel free to add tips, or comment, or make constructive criticism!

By the way: Being a Hero takes skill and common sense, knowing who to avoid, where to avoid, and how to approach people. Being a bandit takes a gun, bullets, and no empathy, only selfishness.

True. Many people think being a Hero is boring, so they end up shooting someone instead of a blood transfusion that they desperately need.

I always remember my uncle's story of when he was a kid: He was about 12-13 and he was walking down the street on a snowy winter day and saw this old man struggling to shovel his driveway. My uncle offered to help, and the old man told him that he would give him $3 for his work. My uncle thought 3 bucks was pathetic and left the old man to do his own driveway. The old man died. True story.

Well after the tragic story, my DayZ tip seems kinda futile, but here goes: Looting by sight is good, but remember that some loot spots can spawn loot that is sunk into the floor. I've noticed it mostly in stair wells, but a few times in other places. If you're on the stairs and see one piece of loot, it might be worth it to check it for others. I've found maps, compasses, etc. that way, even sidearms a few times.

My Tips

1. Be Vigilant, check your surroundings

2. Before you go into somewhere to loot (Town, Deer stand, etc), Reload your weapon regardless if it's full. Great way to check your mags.

3. Don't be a jackass. You'll get yourself killed faster than shit through a goose.

4. Firehouses ftw.

About the backpack. Do you mean the starting backpack or a backpack in general?

Generally I don't use the starting backpack, because I'd have to move stuff out of it into a new one to pick it up and that can be precious time that I don't want to spend in an exposed spot (most likely a super market).

If you mean the Backpack in general: sure, it's essential to manage your backpack space and distribute items of immediate and secondary need accordingly.

I meant in general, I used to forget about it and right there I'd lost 16-20 slots of loot that I could've used.

Found something pretty useful today:

Food and drink is instantly eaten and drunk when lying down.
