Role Playing Aspects and Implications...

Recommended Posts

... as directed by including the phrase RPG in the title of DayZ servers.

I know when I first saw DayZ this is what caught my eye about the mod, as RPG on ArmAII can often be very enjoyable within close-knit communities; but of course DayZ is a different beast entirely.

But where does the community stand on the role playing aspects of the game? With the influx of new players, people new to ArmA, does their portion of the player-base desire this? Will there be RP implications or rules on servers in the future when the game has progressed past core game-play in it's creation?

What kind of roleplay are you talking about?

The best roleplay is emergent roleplay. That embarassing 'roleplay' that comes up through Jailbreak for CS: Source, Chenarus Life for Arma2 and similar games is not roleplay. It is this awkward, forced, rule-based system that is more like a Drama production than true roleplaying.

Jail break is a low end, not serious, fast paced, easy to enter and plug in play kind of roleplay. You can't really roleplay with short sessions of life.

Chenarus life moves up a bit but the way how it is played, you can't really have a continuity a real roleplay has.

Real roleplay is formed from long sessions over time where you can form a character and develop it. You have a continuity of events and character development. With the script at how it is and how Arma 2 is currently, trying to bring in roleplay components would hard.

If any of you have played Garry mod's infamous Dark rp script, thats how things would turn out to be non serious anarchic character development that doesn't really stick to a character since it will die eventually in a short time. There would be no way to roleplay and actually give a damn about the role playing with how fast people die. People are constantly on the move, nomadic, not as much as concerned about other players but about the npc zombies and just constantly edgy and shifting around to not be near zombies.

The best kind of rp we could get from Arma 2 would be similar to Chernarus rp. The only things players would do is collect gear and just keep looking for gear.

Anyway thats my input, I know from experience that RP put in to Dayzmod would not work out well because Gmod has examples of it, Dark rp, OA script, Severance, Phase 4, and many other scripts that are used on servers which say "Game that everyone has played" 'so called serious' rp. If you really wanted to put in RP components, make it basic and light and that it doesn't collide with how the script works and the meta is.
