Hello moto

Suggestion about having delusions.

Recommended Posts

Think about it, you wake up on the beach of some unknown place, with nothing. The nearest town you enter is full of crazy people who run at the speed of Usain Bolt and they try to eat you. Add on top of that the guy you can see in the distance is firing his gun at you.

Add it all up not many people would be able to stay sane for long.

So I suggest that when your'e hungry, thirsty or low on blood (6000 or less) you start having delusions.

They can be simple things like hearing four or five footsteps near you, or hearing a zombie when it isn't their, or even seeing random 'player' sized movements in you peripheral. Even hearing gunshots in the distance, maybe even a helicopter... Just anything that would make the player completely paranoid.

Someone who is low on blood could spend an hour running away from a player only to realize that there wasnt anyone there

Wow, that's creative. First I've seen something mentioned like this and I would say it's a must have feature. Love it. I'd give you all my beans if I could.

Thing is I reckon strong visual hallucinations such as seeing other players following you, would interfere too much with the gameplay. But as I suggested in that other thread what you could do is fuck with the player's situational awareness. Mess with their peripheral vision indicators, creep them out with player noises in forests, make them hear distant gunshots, that sort of thing!

I'm no programmer but I think stuff like that is difficult to make practical unless you're playing a more linear game like F.E.A.R (singleplayer that is). If you have routine visual hallucinations like that, players will soon learn to tell the difference between real players and the hallucinations, making the whole thing pointless and in the end reducing immersion. Similar things have happened in quite a few other games before, where players quickly learn how to overcome an obstacle, and from then on the obstacle just becomes a laughing matter; a bit like how zombies used to be very easy to sneak past by going prone and crawling through a town.

You're completely right, but i think it could still be done, just by simply not over doing it, random distant gunshots would be a good example, you would never know if it was real or not cause you could have different sounds, footsteps would be another good one! :D

Sounds like it would ruin the gameplay a little. There are already 'punishments' for low hunger, thirst and blood.

I don't see them as 'punishments', just as close to realism as a mod in alpha stage can get at the moment.

A delusion could even just be a zombie that screams and runs at you and disappears when close enough. I know I'd be seeing that shit everywhere in a situation like that.

I hear those things already.

O wait, everyone does if they play on a populated server

...Yeah so what we're saying is to make players hear gunshots and noises etc when there is no actual stimuli; and thus simulate a broken down mind.

If I think about what mental problems could occur after a traumatic experience such as an apocalypse what you might mainly find is schizophrenia and depression. The one to cause more freak-you-the-fuck-out is schizophrenia which causes a lot of mind fuck, paranoia, hallucinations, as well as complete changes in thinking that can question your reality: maybe you might believe you had already died at the beginning of the apocalypse, and now this post apocalyptic world you're surviving in is in fact hell. Not nice, I know! But the hallucinations you describe have no place in a game because it's just that - a game. You'd get bored of seeing zombies running at you that aren't there after 5 minutes! The reason it would be scary in real life is because in order to see visual hallucinations, you would be suffering from some kind of mental illness, which would make it scary no matter how ballsy you are.

Good post, I agree with this. The game shouldn't simulate the player being paranoid etc., it's supposed to actually make you FEEL paranoid.

Maybe there should be a meter that is about sociality? The less time you spend with others, the more psycho you are :)

May decrease also from zombie attacks. I know thats a bit of sims but...

Good idea, I like it. Could do with a, how to term this, the longer your character is alive, the less effected they are until they get to a point where it no longer has an effect on them. Makes you want to keep your character alive that much more.

Hallucinations from hunger? No, that's silly.

Hallucinations from extreme thirst? Sure, it does happen. Drinking would need to be changed so that you don't need to be on the verge of dying from dehydration before taking a drink to get maximum effectiveness out of it though.

Hallucinations from excessive blood loss? Why not.

okay, maybe having hallucination from hunger doesn't happen but,

Illusions from thirst and delusions from blood loss? YES!

I like the idea of hallucinations, in reality there is no one that could not become delusional from the amount of stress, fear, and anger that a player endures in this game (trust me I use to work in the psych ward in my local hospital, people aren't made to stay under such conditions for such long periods of time.) This is also a reason a lot of soldiers that return home often have P.T.S.D. Back to the point it would be a little better I think to have a meter that is above the weather one that with enough time would slowly turn red and once that happens the delusions kick in, and perhaps a way to cure it is grouping up with someone, finding anti depressant, or when the stand alone comes out to stay in your underground base away from zombies and bandits.
