herring (DayZ) 0 Posted June 11, 2012 The roads in Chernarus are littered with wrecked cars. I suggest players could use a toolkit and do a "salvage" action which would have X chance of producing some vehicle spare part. It would make the process of restoring vehicles more novel and less frustrating/arbitrary. Also it seems more credible than finding a fully functional engine in someones house. thorlax 32 Posted June 11, 2012 I completely agree with this +
Drakonous 2 Posted June 11, 2012 I would imagine that the highest item to find would thus be Scrap Metal?I feel if implemented this could prove being near a wrecked car could be a dangerous prospect. Also depending on the damage of the vehicle (if it's able to tell) may not yield certain parts. Ex: a crashed hummer that looks like the engine is missing. If implemented this would give a tool box another good use.
herring (DayZ) 0 Posted June 11, 2012 You could certainly expand on it, yes. This being an alpha I'd suggest to start out with the basic idea however. Then judging on how it works try implement realism, ie what you suggested. Introducing a separate special source for car parts would make the whole process of finding them more rewarding, I think. Maybe in the future expand on the diversity of parts? I dont know anything of the limitations of arma2, but customization of vehicles could add some much wanted "end game" content.People are already discussing player settlements, an alternative to this could be a radically expanded vehicle system; vehicles have a great deal of utility that could expanded further through a system of upgrades. Also vehicles doesn't create the same problems with persistence across servers as player settlements does. Finally, in keeping with the spirit of an anarchic and brutal post-apocalyptic world, a mobile home arguably makes more sense than settlements.
imagelesskjc 35 Posted June 11, 2012 Salvaging cars sounds entirely doable, and much better than the typical suggestions we have been getting. +1!It adds more interaction with the environment, which is always a plus.
jamerific 3 Posted June 11, 2012 I like this idea as it also makes it possible to upgrade your vehicle. An example would be putting armor plates on a bus, cow catcher on a car, or a mounted gun on a pickup.

herring (DayZ) 0 Posted June 11, 2012 Hehe. When I suggested upgrades what I had in mind was more modest; improved engine components, off-road tires, expanded storage etc.. Go too far and it quickly gets silly, conflicting with what is otherwise a very stern universe. But when you mention it, technicals could have been an interesting addition. Imagine the horror of being caught in the open by such a thing. Roads would have become far more hazardous. Would have been a nightmare in terms of balancing and griefing/abuse though. Miragenz 71 Posted June 11, 2012 Due to the amount of wrecked vehicles in the world i'd imagine there would be way to many car parts out there. It's already fairly easy to find the parts when you look in the right places, dont think we really need more parts out there.Upgrading a vehicle sounds like fun however, more speed or less sound, better armor etc. However i wonder if the average person would bother due to the likelyhood of being shot down in a car and the fact cars get stolen often. You could balance it however you'd like. For instance make repair-parts common and upgrade-parts more rare. The main point is that it adds authenticity and interaction with the environment. Also, if upgrades were implemented the diversity of parts would increase. If you were looking for something specific it would be frustrating to have to do a "dumb" search by going through dozens of industrial/agricultural spawns finding a gazillion hunting knives and wood piles. If repairing vehicles was less tedious perhaps more players would risk it. Also, you could perhaps add a camouflage-net that would make parked vehicles less glaring.
Bat (DayZ) 230 Posted June 13, 2012 Fresh and really cool idea, I want that in the game ! maybe make car parts less likely to spawn in industrial zones, so that it would be more balanced ? Also why not being able to take out parts from working vehicles ? would add more freedom and choices.
