Logout Timer

Recommended Posts

**I have thoroughly searched the forums for this topic. Thus far, I have not located a topic like it. If this is has already been posted, sorry!**

Thus far in Dayz, I have been plagued by alt+f4ers, people who abort from zombie aggro, and a variety of other players who coward out of fights. A good simple solution to prevent this problem is the introduction of a logout timer. What is a logout timer? Put quite simply, a logout timer is something that when a player disconnects the player's body stays in the server for an addition amount of time past the player's disconnect. The mechanics of how something like this would work could vary and are debatable.

The important thing is that a logout timer would prevent people from evading combat by disconnecting.

Here is an example of logout mechanics that could work for DayZ:

#1: If a player currently has zombie aggro, his body remains on the server for an addition 30 seconds after disconnect.

#2: If a shot lands within X amount of distance from a player, his body remains on the server for an addition 45 seconds after disconnect.

#3: If a player fires a shot, his body remains on the server for 30 seconds after disconnect (except in a case in which Rule #2 applied).

For those of who think this would never work in an online game, EVE has been using a similar style system for years: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Combat_Timers

Thanks for reading.

It's been proposed a lot. I don't understand what's up with search. Topics that have come up a lot can return 0 results when I search for them.

As to logout timers, I can't see a downside to it. Engine limitation is something I've heard mentioned for why it hasn't been done, I am hopeful for standalone. IMO regardless of what you're doing, disconnecting should take 30 seconds, period. Less possibility for gaming the game if it's just there, regardless of what you're doing.

or add a 30 seconds timer when disconnecting might be way easyer than your proposals..

It's simple, click log-out, timer starts, you can stay and watch over your character until timer is up then game auto logs you out. Much simpler system then putting conditions on when it would apply.

yep, have been on the table many times. No need for conditions, just plain simple timer after clicking "disconnect/quit", if you move your char timer stops and has to be started again. And if you client stops responding to the server for time (alt+f4) char stays ingame for 30 second.

Logout timer works very good in EVE - however, you do not have 60% of the players in EVE capable of "spawning" a titan in the space. This feature should be introduced only and after DayZ is at least 90% safe from hacking.
