Standing under a tree will keep you dry when it is raining?

I just noticed that when standing under a large tree, the rain effect is kept at a distance, just like when entering a building. It seems as if perhaps one can keep oneself dry if standing under a large tree when it is raining, so that a campfire isn't strictly necessary if being generally idle.
