A couple of weeks ago it was my second day playing and my mates first.

A mate and I had after several hours of distractions had finally met up near the dear stand in Three Valleys.

We decided to make our was to Berezino thinking it less likely to be occupied than Cherno and Elektro.

So we are heading north looting buildings along the way but staying away from the coastal towns. We make it to a barnish place and he heads in, I (foolishly) leg it across the field an just as I'm entering the door he calls out "Zombies in here don't come in!" Too late. I pull out the hatchet and drop a couple and he shoot a pair also. In amongst it all I get a broken leg. He heads to Berezino for supplies and I start crawling there.

45 minutes or so of crawling later I was hoping a zombie would just find me end it. I hit the edge of town and my hopes rise, I start a tense crawl through looking for the hospital. My mate has gotten hopelessly lost and gets shot after finding a collections of tents somewhere further up the coast.

Finally! The Hospital. I hatchet the windows and crawl in and thank you morphine my leg is healed. I raid supplies, crouch out and see a store. I head in... an Alice Pack my first ever, awesome. And my first gun an AKM excellent! I start loading my bag with food and a compass etc and am babbling excitedly to my mate about the stuff I am finding... should have kept my ears peeled.

I hear CRACK CRACK CRACK and I am dead. Never saw him but it sounded like it came from the direction of the doorway.

Gods this game can be great. I love it.

A couple of weeks in and my mate and I still talk about that crawl to survival that ended so abruptly.

Also:

My first murder (which I still feel bad about, I still wonder if he was actually pointing his gun at me or not)

The other time that three times in the space one night he shot me when trying to hit zombies, the last one being fatal (incidentally HIS first murder)

The hacker that we saw that just waggled at us in his gillie with his AS50 until we panicked and shot at him. At least nine hits and he just walked it off AND LET US LIVE!.

This game has become all about the stories to us. Sure glitches and issues take us out of it at times but we still have the stories.

The players are what made this game, it's their stories, their videos. The game is just a space in which to dream them up. :)

In order to get some stories I've changed my playstyle. I no longer head much to the north, I do not hoard stuff nor vehicles.

Instead I am trying to get humanity so basically talk to the people before shooting.

Does it get me killed a lot? Oh yes, but there are also times when I meet friendly people and they usually say something like I am the first person that did not try to murder them on sight.

Try this playstyle. It is doable, you just have to accept the higher probability of dying and you need to let go the fear of losing stuff.

I'm totally ok with just having winchester or enfield and I tend to find AK/AKM or M4/M16 quite a lot while adventuring in Cherno / Elektro.

In past 3 days I had bandit shooting me in the head while I was tending to his wounds, sniper with AS50 on killing spree, saving my buddy few times, meeting 3 friendly people (I've added one finnish lad to Steam friend list) and lots of interesting gameplay down in the south :-).

I still can't decide if to shoot "towel heads" on sight even if they are unarmed and I will probably resort to this soon.
