They're not completely useless. Apparently they can track things, what things specifically i don't know. They will also warn you of danger, but hopefully they also know how to stfu if you tell them to.

When dogs come into the 1.7.3 patch, I suggest they should have a lie down command also. To me, seems like people can see a dog just standing there in a field and I won't want my dog to be shot. =( and if not a lie down command he or she should be have a crawl command. Could have both lie down and a crawl command.
