I'm trying to loot a pixache off the ground, but pressing G does nothing?

... There is no pickaxe? If you mean fire-axe, in your tool belt right click it. Remove from toolbelt.

Yeah, best take yourself and your pick axe to nw airfield, you'd be surprised how quick you go through 10,000 rounds. :)

To pick up a hatchet you can look at it, scroll and put "Take Hatchet" - from there it'll be in your toolbelt when you check your gear. To equip it, press G (to open your gear) and right click the axe, then you just click "remove from tool-belt" and it'll use your primary weapon slot. You may have to press R to "reload" it before use. As for the crowbar, you pick it up and it has to be your primary weapon.

Yeah the pick axe will get you through most of the game. Make sure to just keep looking around the major cities for the scope attachment for the axe. If you come across a group of players with guns make sure to go and introduce yourself so they know you are not a bandit.
