When I first installed DayZ I experienced this same issue, but the major Arma2 patch seemed to fix it for me.

Now my buddy is experiencing the same issue after a clean install.

He has the Steam version Arma2 OA, but had to download Arma2 Free from the BI website.

Used DayZ commander to install all beta patches and DayZ files.

Appreciate any help.
