how do i use the mic

i just bought a headset with a mic, but i'll be damned if i know how to use it. I don't know shit about computers, the only game i play on them is dayz. Would you kindly share your wisdom as to how I can make myself heard in chernarus, as I evaluate it will raise my chances of making friendlies by about 274%. Also, will everybody hear me on the server? because yesterday i was on a server where i could hear 2 people talking wherever i was. What should i do to make myself heard to only my surroundings?
