I was told temperature was removed and that heatpacks are useless and the temperature picture on the hud is useless. is this true?

No the temperature gauge blinks when you are cold enough to get sick.

No, it is still in the game, that debug monitor you see, will not be there in the stand alone, people still get cold and sick, you just got to know when to light a fire or use a heat pack to keep warm.

Nope, it's still around. You have to keep an eye on meter, when it starts flashing, you're cold. Use a heatpack or fire or get inside. You can still get 'sick' with the coughing and the health loss. Hence heatpacks and antibiotics still spawn.
