Questions about Dayz

so, i bought dayz about a week ago and im still learning about how to play it.

So here are a few quesitons that would be very helpful if you could answer

-How do you work your map? (How do you move around, know where deer stands / other stuff is located

-How do you work the chat? (Is there a way to talk with your friend on the server. Is there a way to be in a group?)

It would be awesome if you could answer these questions and if you have any other tips, that I didnt even ask for could you please tell me THANKS :)

Press M. Servers differ, some will show your position (mostly Regular servers) as a blue dot with directional arrow. Others (most veteran) will not. It does not show loot locations. You'll have to check an external site for that.

-How do you work the chat? (Is there a way to talk with your friend on the server. Is there a way to be in a group?)

Not built into the mod. You have to use vent/ts/steam to do voice privately with friends. Press the "," key to switch to direct chat in game, and the type "/" to type a local message to all players, or CAPSLOCK to speak to local players. Not sure of the range...its short...like 100m maybe. You don't in all situations (like chatting with a buddy) want to do this. Use with caution!

The maps you find online if you want "loot maps" with the Deer stand locations..the ingame map, is only a map...it shows you where the hills, forests and buildings are. But it doesn't show which kinds of buildings it is.

Try to use "landmarks" to navigate with, until you get a compass/learn the map..like powerlines, main roads and the likes.

The ingame map you move by using rightclick and mousewheel to zoom, you can add a waypoint by Shift-leftclick. (not all servers allow it)

You can use Direct chat to talk to friends. it only works within 40-80 meters...depending on if you type or use mic (i forget which one has further range). Other than that, you use skype/ts/vent/mumble.

If you want to just kill other people stay near the coast. If you want to kit up in safety, leave the coast as soon as you can. Find a Red Roof barn and find your first weapon in there. About 1 kilometer inland, you are in relative safety.

Re-bind your compass/watch/gps to a single key (the toggle key) <- my preference atleast.

Move away your "vault" key from the stand key, so you don't jump off a roof by accident with your oldest character.

Don't go near Stary sobor and the airfield by yourself and expect to live, I give you about a 30% chance to get out safely on medium population servers.

Keep your eyes open for crashed choppas in fields. I like to do a run from Vybor west until I hit stary, cross over north (until you are about 500 meters north of stary) and continue to run west.

DO NOT FUCKING RUN ON ROADS! Crouch and walk over.

You can use "line of sight" to lose zombies...if you run around a corner he will not be able to follow you...he will run up to where he last saw you and investigate the area. If you did it right, stay still and don't make any noise/movements. he will walk off.
