Loading time on empty (or allmost) servers

Usually, less players on a server equals faster loading time. But on some servers even with only 1-2 players i can take 5-10 minutes. My ping on the server is around 30-50. Any ideas why it takes so much time?

server could be disconnected from the hive so it shows the last few peeps to try to log on... it will always show those people until the connection is made again.. ALL HAIL THE HIVE!

Assuming your running 1.7.2.5, make sure you're connecting to servers running that version. Connecting to servers running older version can cause long load times and potential respawning.
