Storage Cabinets

Recommended Posts

One thing I would love to see in dayz is storage cabinets. Instead of picking up a ton of loot and having to drop it on the ground ( I think after a while this loot despawns?) The map makers could go into all of the buildings and add a storage cabinet that saves all the items that has been put into it. For the sake of immersion, only certain items can be placed inside a certain type of storage cabinet. Food would be placed in a cupboard, guns could be placed on a gun rack, medical supplies would be placed in a medical cabinet.

I have read around for other similar posts and it seems people want to be able to "claim" a building or storage unit as their own. This is not part of my post because I don't see the realism of claiming a building just by putting a sign or something on it saying it's yours. In this post I want to talk about just plain storage cabinets- inside random buildings for all to use and claim the items inside it. First come first serve style. One way to actually "claim" a storage unit would be to find a 4 number passworded safe. This would take a while to crack, but it would be possible since you already know the password is 4 numbers. You could also use a finger dusting kit to find out which numbers have been used recently. Once you crack the safe you can set the 4 number password for yourself.

So do you think this would make it too easy to get gear if too many people are using the storage system? After all you could always take everything in the cabinet and throw it on the floor so others can't use them > :) Also the storage cabinets capacity could be limited so that you can't store 20 cans of beans in one for example.

To be clear:

- "Storage Cabinets" are placed by mod team at dayz in strategic locations on the map.

- They do not spawn anything inside them, only items placed by players can be found in them.

- The storage can not be picked up or moved in anyway. They are part of the map.

- There could be many different types of storage units like cabinets, gun racks, medical supply cabinets, and crackable safes.

- Only certain types of items can go in its appropriate container. Guns on gun racks, food in cupboard, etc..

For now give me some feedback, I'll take all your comments!

edited for clarity.

That would be cool to see, but if they add cabinets I'd think they would be used to store items instead of throwing them on the floor. That would mean the cabnits would spawn new items when spawning happens, but maybe have separate cabinets/trunks to hold gear. This would add a treasure like feel to going into a building, then bam! Loots R Us~ Of course this idea needs more elaborating on, but could work out!

Well the idea is to put items you don't need right away but that are useful. They wouldn't spawn anything inside them, only items that players have found and placed in them. You would hope people would be nice and fill the cabinets with goodies instead of throwing them on the ground, but people are people what can you do. I also wanted to talk about adding not just storage cabinets but closets, chests, gun safes, medical cabinets, etc.. but I don't have time right now. I like the idea that you can only put certain items into certain types of storage units. So you can only put guns for example on a gun rack or gun safe for example. I will try to elaborate more thank you for your comment!

So wait. In a game where tents and vehicle storage already allow new players to gear up to highest level in a matter of minutes and where people die without consequence over and over and over again giving the middle finger to permadeath, you're suggesting cities full of extra storage that are easily accessible to players...?

This won't have any unintended consequences.

@mZLY

So you are against any base building?

@BazBake

At least you have to risk getting killed by zombies to get to the storage, unlike tents which can also dupe objects.

@lazyorc

...You win this round.

Most likely the things found in the storage are going to be things you would likely find in the city that it's in. Unless people are running from one city just to deposit things in a storage location in another city, and even if this was the case the storage capacity would be very limited. The idea is to give players a kind of hiding spot to place a useful item and have to remember where they put it if they need it later. Not to horde a ton of crap. This also adds a new element of surprise as you search a cabinet and find something unexpected that another player placed in there. Or possibly you were trolled as someone put a bunch of empty tin cans or soda cans where you stored a can of beans :(
