Sound & Smell oriented Z magnets

Recommended Posts

I love how the infected can aggro based off sight or sound or the combination of the two.

But something CRITICAL is missing.

When a player runs by bleeding a stream of crimson from their head, I FULLY expect to see a horde of Z's sniffing the air and rushing him/her... even collecting and staying near the blood that was tracked on the ground.

And why the hell doesn't the church bell draw dozens of Z's to the church? I would fully expect that the sound would draw them in droves, and then when it went off the Z's would pause and look around expectantly and sniff the air and possibly aggro temporarily on another nearby Z just from frustration.

Imagine that the blood/fire/food smells and environmental audio triggered Z aggro... or even just INTEREST.

You'd walk into a town and see a small cluster of Z's hanging out around a specific spot... where another player had bled on the ground. Obviously over time you have the strength of the blood smell fade, so the Z's would move away from the source. Especially in rain. Rain "cleanses" the area of the smell.

Or you get close to a church and see DOZENS of Z's gathered...

Or you'd be camping at night and your fire's smoke and food smells would draw a few midnight dinner-guest stragglers in...

Implement a "nose" icon just under the "eye" and "ear" icons, too... showing how much you're stinkin the place up. ;)

This has the added ability to require bathing in the water to reduce your body odor... lulz.

Yeah. I'd love to see that mechanic implemented. It would need to be monitored and trimmed, though... IE: allow a maximum of X number of Z's to be attracted to this area due to environmental audio. This prevents lag from walking around the corner and seeing 200 Z's at a church...

Our diets consist of beans, sardines, pasta, and grilled meat. The zombies can probably smell us from 10km away.

I think it would be far too ahrd to implement, especially at this stage where it's ALPHA based off an engine that I believe doesn't already have a smell system built in to it.

BUT, I love the Idea and maybe once it goes to a standalone game it'd be an awesome asset.

A smell algorithm would make things a little more complete. As it is now, Zeds should gravitate in your general direction from smell, but not give away your direct position. Would make sneaking tougher, but not impossible. If bleeding though, yes, you should get horde aggro from it, from quite a distance.

Just thought of something else to add to this...

Imagine killing an infected and being able to "gut" them with the hunting knife just like you do animals... and you get "Infected Guts". Then you could "Wear" them. The scent would confuse the Z's and the ZedHeads would think you were a zombie, too... allowing you to run right by them without much notice... until the scent "dried" or the rain "washed it off"... ;D

That'd be awesomesauce.

What if the flies you hear is your smell meter? And the more flies you hear, the louder your ambient sound level while standing still?

So at stinky you get one or two flies and you see them on your camera flying around and you hear an intermittent buzz circling your head but you're not making a sound. It's annoying but you're not in danger.

At smells-like-booty-juice you get a small cloud of buzzing at the corners of your screen and you have one tick on your ambient noise level. Zombies know you're there (not by the flies but by the smell that attracted the flies...but it's tied to your noise level in the code so you can keep track). Zombies will slowly be drawn to your position if close.

At holy-lord-that-is-some-shit-stench-funkiness you get flies everywhere around you with buzzing sounds spinning about your head and your ambient noise level is two ticks without moving. This signifies that zombies know you're there from quite a distance away.

Bleeding without bandaging yourself increases your stink level. As does running long distances. You can lower your stink level by bathing or standing in the rain for a short period of time. It would motivate players to take risks to their health in order to keep their stink down and take risks to their items by going into water as well.
