shoulda picked up the hatchet in the shed. you can run Zs into a choke point and kill them by the dozens. it's a good way to get

food and soda and extra bandages quickly so you can concentrate on finding matches and a knife and a weapon... and morphine of course.

also after you jump a fence, crouch run around the corner of a building and stop. they'll lose you if you do it right.

knowing how to lose Zs is the most important skill in the game... especially in cities where firing your weapon will draw all the wrong kind of folks

to your location. doors, gates, fences, broken walls, and large bushes are your friends when it comes to losing the Zs.

right click on it, select "remove from toolbelt", exit the invintory and reload it. learning the range is something you'll have to do on your own through trial and error, but the hatchet can be a very effective Z killer in the right hands. it's also silent, so you won't agro Zs even mere meters away when you kill with it. also very important: it occupies your primary weapon slot, when you do find a new primary weapon be sure that before you pick it up you go into your inventory and right click on the hatchet and select "add to tool belt". this way you can chop your own wood and eat a beast. all the specifics can be found here.
