Hunting Knife as a Weapon

Use the same mechanic as the hatchet switch it from the toolbelt to the main weapon slot. Have it do not much damage maybe, oh, 350 something blood?

Yea I've always thought you should be able to do that, either that or add fists as a weapon and have KO's as a part of it. I mean, it's better than nothing.

I think this game needs more melee weapons though. The casual player often does not get a chance to get sd ammo or silenced guns. At night time you want to make as little noise as possible so you use the fire axe if you dont have a quite weapon. Personally, I would like to see maybe a katana or chain saw replace the pistol slot so you can have a silent kill weapon as a secondary.

I think the entrenching tool should also be a melee weapon that you can wield agianst zombies sort of like a shovel

But seriously, wheres the baseball bat or golf club to quietly take down some zombies. The options for a silent melee weapons are endless. Who needs a crappy pistol when you can cleave zombies with a butchers knife?

Atm their are how many melee weapons? An axe and a crowbar? Thats it....common. It would also be cool to see more throwable objects.Which also should be added to kill zombies at range quietly.

More Throwable weapons ideally:

Throwing knifes

Saw blades

Tomahawk

Molotov cocktails

Cans (already in game)

Bottles (already in game)

Darts

Melee weapons ideally:

Knife (hunting knife)

Axe (hatchet)

Crow Bar

Shovel (entrenching tool)

Bat

Chain saw

Katana

Tire Iron

chunk of wood ( should be able to swing your fireplace wood at zombies, I mean hey its a weapon right?)

I agree with you that there should be much more melee weapons, it would just be realistic to see all the knifes, pickaxes, spades and sledgehammers being the standard weapons of a fresh survivor.

But i don't think that a chainsaw would serve very well as a silent weapon. ;)

This has been suggested basically daily, use the search engine..

Also this would be very difficult to implement in Day Z's current form using the Arma 2 engine, maybe in Stand-alone but I'm doubtful.

Love the ideas, I think if they added more melee weapons to the mod their should be a completely different slot for melee weapons, so you could have a primary and secondary weapon, and onother slot for melee weapons if you run out of ammo

You have to remember melee is new to ARMA engine and is flawed to shit.... stand-a-lone maybe be in it? I just want to pick up a branch and break skulls ^^

Half Life's Crowbar uses the same systems DayZ uses, It's a "pistol with 1m of range where the bullet dissapears after 1m", It's not a bad system.

I think that Knive as melee it's logical, but using pistol slot not primary.

Does anyone ask themselves why melee weapons or melee combat itself is not present in RV engine?

It's because it has been created to assist with training soldiers for combat, and you should never seek to engage in melee combat. Range is a huge tactical advantage, going into melee combat throws away your advantage and exposes you to injury. A silenced weapon coupled with range > knife to throat, there is less risk. The image of a SF soldier knifing a sentry is complete BS fabricated for movies.

In DayZ people are desperate and unarmed thus improvised weapons or melee weapons should have a small place I think. They should be an afterthought though, as they would/should only be used until you find a gun. Just as a handgun is *really* only used to kill/defend until a rifle is aquired/functional.

The second point to consider with melee combat in DayZ is that the infected feel no pain, emotion, and do not care about their own survival. This would greatly increase their effectiveness even unarmed against an opponent in hand to hand combat. You would basically have to kill one with one attack in the .5 seconds that they are within range before they reach you, not only are most weapons incapable of this, but virtually no one is trained in a martial art that is designed to do this. If this were 1200AD maybe, but its not, so the training and weapons required to fight this way are non existent.

The third point against melee combat, but especially knives is that if they do "authentic" damage compared to bullets or an axe they are useless. Thus they must be implemented as garbage insta kill weapons for "balancing" and IMO that means they should not be implemented.

If you say "no" they should be realistic then consider the following.

Lets examine this, a 9mm round does almost 900 damage, a FMJ round will break through bones and exit the body. A knife, even a "combat knife" not a "hunting knife" will do 4-6 inches of penetration via a direct stab and maybe an inch via a slashing attack. Individual attacks thus would be less damaging than a 9mm round, meaning you would have to hit a player character more than 15 times with the weapon and a Z more than 6.

Do you think this would be a usefull weapon or that it would serve a purpose in game and thus be worth the development time taken to implement the weapon and annimations?

First of wow, it's not like I asked to have a swordplay implement it would be so you at least have something to use until you find a handgun and primary.
