** EDIT 2 **

We're live:

http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/74864-dayz-adminz-part-ii-the-dayz-adminz-strike-back/

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gentlemen,

Given jwiechers post regarding the setting up of a closed forum for server admins to exchange and discuss information about their servers and the fact that they just don't have the staff or the time to set-up a separate forum right now I'm proposing to do one.

I think using the hosted IPB (Invision Powerboard) is easy enough and relatively low cost, which I do not mind footing the bill for.

To ensure we keep it a closed forum for server admins I am proposing that a joining method would be implemented. This would required you to change the name of your server to include a small 5 digit code. This would prove that you have administrator access to your server and once acknowledged you'd be free to remove it.

To ensure there's enough interest for this can you indicate whether you'd be interested in jumping through the hoops to join the said forum.

Thanks.

** EDIT **

Please vote in the new poll. jwiechers has suggested we use a website and forum and wiki that he had previously set-up. We have already set-up forums on the URL in the second poll option.

I don't care either, as long as long as something gets done. So we will use this poll as the full and final answer as to what to do.

The comments sent to me in PM covering the opinions of what to do for the best are:

  • "Would prefer to do this independent of DayZ"
  • "We need the buy in from DayZ staff"

My opinion is it would be better to be independent, owned by the community, but with DayZ staff involved - this will be reflected in my vote. I don't want to see this idea die and I am concerned how the DayZ staff will operate the forums. I have a fairly free reign in my role to be on-line a lot.

Voted, i would join the forum. Pretty sure some useful knowledge can be exchanged :)

You make a good point, I totally forgot to put the pertinent reasons!

  • Posting of entries from log files for members to discuss and exchange knowledge about what is going on
  • Areas to discuss script/createvehicle/remoteexecute text files to weed out problems and look to improve them
  • Possible sharing of bans, depending how server admins feel about that
  • Other areas to make servers more secure and a knowledge base of cheaters methods & tricks

Anything else you guys think would be useful.

Wouldnt an easier way to make sure players are the admins when they say they are for you to log into that server and then just seeing them log in as an admin? instead of changing the name of the server which could be a longer process and annoying if ou have to restart it for it to show up.

Just giving my two cents, its your forum and you said you will be flipping the bill so, your rules go :)

if u can change the name of the server, you are the admin of this box/dedicated server, not "only" co admin

Sounds like a lot of work on one persons part. Adding a code or tag to the server name is easy enough.

Yup. Defo be handy to have an area to discuss admin related issues without destraction of posts of admin abuse and general flaming and trolling.

Overwhelming support - thank you guys.

I've gone ahead and purchased the board - give me 20-30 mins to set it up and I'll get back to you.

Would be good to have some of the dev team on board also to offer guidance and to help us maintain transparency.

Very much so - will be back shortly with the URL.

Right, lets get the ball rolling, the URL is:

http://dayzadminz.invisionzone.com/

It's a work in progress. I've used IPB before but not the hosted version. Let's start with some registrations and get some admins verified. Once again I apologise for the hoops to join, but I'm sure you'll agree you'd prefer to have verified server admins only in the forum.

This is not meant to take away from the community that is here, but complement it.

I had actually set that up, before I joined the support team, it's currently not really developed further, though. We also setup a wiki, although, if we really had a lot of members, I'd probably add a wiki to the forum solution so it is easier to share authentication. I'd be happy to develop that further (and I've got the IPB/xenforo/vB license to spare)

Ah, damn, bit too late -- you already paying for that?

As said in PM, I have the licenses to run that without added cost, anyway and would be happy to see a forum like that grow. :-)

Yes, but I don't mind - please come along.

Well, the advantage would be that we have more control if it's dedicated hosting. That is, we *can* add stuff like a wiki directly integrated with the forum. That's why I'd favor that solution (I would obviously give you and a couple of others admin rights if we used my stuff), as said, it's more of a coincidence that I already set that up but never got it started (well, we have a secondary IRC channel where we've been discussing stuff, so the forum wasn't necessary for the ten or so of us).

You mean abandon what we're doing now and go to the solution you're suggesting?

I don't really mind - this is not the emperors new clothes, a few things about that suggestion that cause me concern. We came to this decision due to the inaction from the DayZ moderators on these forums, which is why I think a community led forum may be better.

Although I've gone with a hosted solution - it is not difficult to transfer to a self-hosted solution if it takes off. I have access to plenty of servers to achieve this.

The longevity of this project may not warrant spending too much time and money on it. It's meant as an interim solution till we see what happens with standalone.

Well, as said, I'm not an "official", I'm just community support. :P

And I also don't really want to lead anything, I just think it'd be better to have things in an environment where someone has full control over the software. :-)

Well, I've already signed up to yours Gogster, BUT.

Jens is an incredibly pro-active and smart fellow, and I would prefer an area ran by a massively active and recognised community member (no offence intended) with access to the development team.

Don't worry about offence Greg, the point is to establish how its done for the best. I see positives from both tbh, i fear the rug being pulled if as a group our thoughts differ from the official team. But having them involved is key for both resources, validity and transparency.

As someone who agrees with the dayz rule set I don't mind how its done so long as it is.
