We need better Logs. Badly.

Recommended Posts

We need to see who killed who, when and where. I get reports from my players that some guy teleports around killing people. They tell my the time and the names of the victims, but with the current logs there is nothing I can do about it.

You can provide all of the above information with event handler, but as far as I know, those have to be in the mission file, so we are not able to do anything, since tempering with that gets me blacklisted. This has to be a priority (since the beginning) but is just ignored, it seems.

Yes, BE gets better. But that does not help me at all in some cases.

There are hundreds of people paying for servers so Rocket and his crew are able to develop the game with as many players as possible, yet no basic tools are provided for those who invest their time and money. Stop adding content as long as there are major problems with such basic things. For every entity added in the game there are new possibilities and holes for hackers, which we are not able to identify. It's depressing.

Or maybe I just missed something.

You've missed one thing; Rocket and the devs are working on the standalone version of Dayz, which will include methods to prevent hackers to do their thing.

The ArmA2 engine has been developed to be as open as possible, to help the community to be able to modify the game for their purposes. This includes the DayZ mod.

However, any anti-cheat or anti-hack script were never an issue, because most ArmA2 players are mature enough to keep it fair.

DayZ has changed the userbase of ArmA2 and therfor attracted a lot of hackers, cheaters and scriptkiddies... The only way to "fix" this is by closing the engine for modifications, which can only be done by rewriting the core of the engine and thus requires a standalone version.

I'm not saying the standalone version will be hack-free, but reduced a lot compared to the current situation. The mod will be "modable" and thus have a lot of scripts running which shouldn't be there.

So, you can play the game for free now, with a change of encountering a scriptkiddy, or wait till the standalone version and play ArmA2 instead with mature players all around the world.

Yes, I know how the engine works and what the pro and cons are. I also know, that we won't be able to prevent hacker from doing their thing. But my point is, we need more information about players in the logs, things which are possible (and are used) on normal Arma2 servers.

Whats wrong with the logs providing more detailed information? Server admins IMO are the last line of defense agianst hackers. IF anything admins should have all the tools at their disposal to rid players who are scum. Paying for a server, imo should give you the right to take out the trash in your server even if its leased.

That's just 'omg its all scrips fault' retarded talk. The only thing that will change is the cheats, and the only true method to keep hackers at bay is human analysis and intervention as in good logs and admin tools..Cheats happen, you can put up fences and barriers in the client but they are going to happen and you only have to break said barriers once. The client is the moat and gate of a castle. If you don't have anyone defending the walls and watching who tries to get in (as in logs), eventually someone will break down the gate and then anyone can get in because there's nobody shooting intruders.
