Why don't wells work for my canteen?

My character is almost dying of thirst. The canteen icon is very red, and I have no idea when it will start flashing and I will die. I found a well though, (with a lever and such) but it gave me no option to fill my canteen up. I was pissed. I had to keep running for a lake, or house to look for soda. Next time I get on I hope I can find something, or i'm dead :(

I do have another question... How long do I have when the icon flashes?

Are you sure youre right clicking the canteen in the gear menu?

Wait so you have to stand in front of the well, go the the menu and right click canteen? I did not do this but I will try thnx

Yup, you gotta right click the empty canteen.

there are two types of water pumps (wells) - one where the top metal part comes from the exact center of the concrete base and the other where it is slightly off of the center.. only the first type is working (based on my experience from a few patches ago, please correct me if I'm wrong)

Go into the water (you dont need to swim) and open your gear (G) and right klick on the bottle :)
