Map does not show up

Whenever I hit the map command I just receive a black screen and nothing is on it. Is there a way to fix it?

Did you find a map in game? You need to find an actual map in game to be able to view it.

Can you see it in your utility items bar at the bottom of your inventory?

As choc has said, you need to find a map in game the same as you would find Coke Cans / ammo etc in game.

And importantly you need to make sure you pick it up! Once it is in your inventory press "m" and the map will appear.
