Starting without a gun

I start the game without a gun, and tutorials on youtube, people start with guns, am i doing something wrong, or is this normal? can someone please explain, ive tried looking for answers but cannot find any.

it was a recentish patch, where now you don't start with a gun.

Right-click it and remove it from your toolbelt into your secondary weapon slot. Then you hit "L" to turn it on or off.

Make sure you don't have a secondary weapon or you won't be able to equip it.
