commandercaleb 1 Posted August 10, 2012 Hi, I recently bought a DayZ server and I was wondering if there is any rule against stopping your server at night so your server will not be hacked or exploited when my staff team isn't online. Is this allowed? I do not want to get in trouble for this, but it seems like a good legitimate reason until the hacker problem is completely fixed. So what is your opinions on this? Bulletproof Sandwich 57 Posted August 10, 2012 You sure?yes you can turn your server off when you feel there is no moderation during "off" hoursyou aren't passwording it or anything at all so you are free to turn it on and off as you wish

So what is your opinions on this?you sure thats your only reason? or is it at night you dont have guys online who can look over your vehicles etc. Also even if there was a hacker during the day, there is nothing you can do about it. also cheaters are on the daytime servers. not really on night servers

Locked servers are open to admin abuse. I see your point about turning off the server but it's a legitimate concern given the hacking issues at the moment.

Why not just get someone from europe to cover the night? Assuming you are from the US.

commandercaleb 1 Posted August 10, 2012 Not exactly from what I heard, a few servers I was on the last few days player-hunting at night time got exploited rapidly, fire everywhere, ammo boxes with every gun in the game, etc.I play a lot during the day-time, and just knowing that I could be online or one of my admins when a hacked attacked we could do a few things about it.So what do you think? phred 5 Posted August 10, 2012 I think that shutting down your server is probably against the spirit of the rules. It could be interpreted as you trying to protect your loot when you aren't online. It also means that if people make tentsites on your server, they won't be guaranteed access to it later (go on an extended vacation, and other players will be SOL).
commandercaleb 1 Posted August 10, 2012 Well I am kinda confused, two sides are telling me two stories...I do have a camp on my server, yes. So in ways it does involve my camp and any campsite on my server if there was to be a hacker, I heard tons and tons of stories of people losing everything do to hackers with some sort of tent finder as well as a car finder. But that isn't the main situation it is just in general if a hacker would want to screw up my server when only a few players are online they could do that if I allow my server to be online 24/7.So what? honestly I need to know seriously what to do? Everyone is giving me mixed options.
Fraggle (DayZ) 15720 Posted August 10, 2012 I personally wouldn't want to play on a server that "closed" for the night. If I set up a camp on your server it means I can only access it while your online. I think the only answer is patience. Battleye have made some progress recently. Many people got kicked banned while I was playing last night (ON A NIGHT SERVER). Also, they've started dishing out warnings and bans to people carrying dodgy weapons. it's always going to be a problem with this mod because the Arma engine is heavily client sided and not really designed with a game like DayZ in mind. The the standalone will be a different story though. Nice.
phred 5 Posted August 10, 2012 Hopefully, a team member will chime in here and clarify. Currently, the "rules" don't give server owners much leeway. If you do shut your server down on a regular basis, people may post server/admin abuse complaints, which may cause your server to be blacklisted.

I don't think that by closing your server over night will help the issue though, you might end up with the opposite problem. My home server is always populated day and night with the same players most of the time. It quickly becomes obvious to the admins when someone new and dodgy starts running scripts or cheating. you'll never manage to build a decent player base if you keep turning off your server so you may end up with the only people wanting to use it being hackers or exploiters. commandercaleb 1 Posted August 10, 2012 Yes, that would be nice for a staff member of DayZ to respond. My only other question is, would I get in trouble for turning my server off at night? just in general.
Element47 2481 Posted August 10, 2012 the question is, whats the point? object-location hacks work by reading the process memory, so you cant help it anyway by "moderating", either BattlEye detects it by RPM pattern scans or not. You can analyze server logs for some noobs invoking scripts, but thats about all.By turning the server off half the time, you, and the regular players on your server probably lose more than what you gain. gwbrewer 49 Posted August 10, 2012 My thoughts are, You're the Admin. If it is a pattern of lights go out at 9pm and all are aware on your server and it happens everyday.. It is their choice to keep logging in.. There are 4k other servers to play on.
MinDBlanK 16 Posted August 10, 2012 What Mindblank? that didn't make much sense?Made perfect sense, I will be stopping my server in the hours when no admins are about, hence why I said I will be from now on.
Mindless (DayZ) 2 Posted August 10, 2012 I leave my server running all the time unless I find a hacker has been on. I then shut down the server till I can track them down in my console log and ban them. Only have 4 admins on my server and we pretty much all work and sleep at the same time so there's a lot of admin downtime and we've only run into 2 hackers in 2 weeks.
