Ethical Question: Using Hacks/Scripts as an Admin to Defend Against Hackers

Recommended Posts

What do you think? It's an interesting moral question brought up by one of my customers last night.

Is it okay to use hacks/scripts in the defense of your own server from malicious script kiddies?

I actually welcome the horror roleplayers. We had one last night who would play creepy jewelry box sounds and appear behind random people ala Slender. Scared the crap out of some of my regulars!

However, the dupers, thunderdomers and general asshats need to be stopped. Would this be ethical to do?

Before you ask; no - we don't do it. It's just a question that I thought merited some discussion.

Some will support it, some will not. If you feel you need to do this to keep your server populated I guess no one can stop you.

lmao people would rather go to a different server

there are thousands they could move to if an admin ever resorted to running scripts

hell the guy will probably get banned long before he takes care of the script kiddies "plaguing" his server

The fact your thinking it is ethically wrong. I once knew an admin from a different game who got hold of all the hacks so he could test them to aid him in catching hackers, sorry but this is morally dubious. Another admin from same game began to develop his own anti-cheat he was respected by me and many others and his anti cheat became one of the most popular alas he got lured to the dark side as those who can program anti cheat can often make the best cheats a sad sad day.

What you are considering should never be attempted and I question the maturity and responsibility of those involved to even consider it a good idea.

There are also far more effective ways to police your server legitimately, our own server certainly does not seem to suffer hardly as bad as others and it's well populated.

Pretty sure he's not going to be thunderdoming his own server you fucking idiot. He'll be using ESP or whatever to see the guys who're flying around, the guys teleporting, or the guys speedhacking.

No, that's not what he meant.

He meant using tools such as invisibility/teleportation to keep an eye on suspected players. Nothing at all destructive. No spawning, no abuse. Basically use the hacker scripts in place of the admin tools we should have anyway.

One of the issues I've found is that because of Multiplay's setup, it's impossible to parse scripts.log to check for hackers - they all use the BE bypass anyway now, but it would be nice to see who is carrying the hacked-in items.

With ESP/Invis/Teleportation, our staff can monitor the server in real time. Yes. We are a business and we have someone watching the server during business hours but we cannot be up 24/7. We have started quite a following for the mod within our LAN center community (there's a 300+ player LAN event next weekend, so expect the server to be full for those 48 hours) and we want to protect our regulars. We do not use scripts at all, but one of our customers brought up the idea last night after the Horror RPer spooked us all out :)

Will never happen. I've been an Everquest GM, Admin'd various servers from Quake2 through to BF3 and never, not once abused my powers. Ever. This is not new to me.

I want to look after my customer base; my brick and mortar business depends on them, so I have a little more at stake here than most. However, ALL server admins need tools to protect their own communities. We're not special in any way or deserve any kind of special treatment; I would just like to give as much protection as possible.

Also looking for some Admins of older servers who can share their BE bans lists. I think a central repository would be a good idea.
