Wanted Posters + noticeboards

Recommended Posts

This got buried in another thread, think it's a separate idea so reposting (searched but didn't find anything.)

I was thinking, what would really happen in a world with no electronic communications and bandits plaguing the population? Community-minded people would still try to find a way to warn others about dangerous individuals. And then it hit me - Wild West style wanted posters. My idea for this to work in DayZ:

1.) Every player needs a unique physical appearance upon spawn - clothing, facial hair, hat, sunglasses etc. (Arma2 engine can do this).

2.) Every major town should contain a noticeboard with 'Wanted posters' - physical descriptions of the worst bandits (5+ murders gets you on the list). Could even add 'artists impressions' (sketches).

3.) Only bandits currently active in the server are listed.

4.) When you view the noticeboard, you get a copy of the list added to the 'notes' on your map screen.

At least that way people would have more info about who to avoid. Fairly realistic way of passing information too (after all, this forum is just a glorified noticeboard :D )

Plaguing? What population? The 40~ surivors than aren't even organized?

Population = the 90% of players who aren't bandits. They are a de facto community.

And there are servers with up to 70 players now. In the future, we can hope for 100+.

They are de facto random people that rarely cooperate.

I could say that all obese people are a community but there's only so many of them on tematic forums.

It would be cool if you could place a poster yourself but i reckon that is hard to implement.

Nothing is supposed to generate on itself apart from zombies and loot in this game.

I think you misunderstand the concept of 'community'. It can be as loose a definition as simply all law-abiding people in a certain area, because they all agree to a shared code of conduct (i.e. not murdering each other). That creates the aforementioned de facto community. Obese people can't be considered a community because they have no social contract (no interaction at all, in fact).

It is human nature for the majority to create this community based on a shared code of conduct (aka 'The Law'), just as it is natural for the anti-social minority (criminals) to prey on the masses. Wanted Posters are a proven method for a low-tech 'community' to share important information.

And what exactly are those laws? Are we projecting real life on a video game now?

Noone agrees on anything until they do.

People agree to not kill each other and travel in a group? Cool.

They have much better chances versus bandits/zombies, it is their reward for cooperating.

I believe what you are talking about was best implemented in the wild west.

In towns. With law enforcement.

Someone puts up the posters. Someone leaves beans and coke around as they die or become zombies. Someone built all the towns and roads in Chernarus.

And what exactly are those laws?

Whatever the majority decides. And because the majority wish to co-operate in order to survive (last count about 90% of players are socially minded), it makes sense that they would share information about bandits. Hence this suggestion.

Bandits grouping is not a social activity?

You just expect posters to magically appear because allegedly 90% of people don't want to kill other people? I still don't get how this is supposed to work without their involvement.

Sorry, but I give up arguing with you, as I can't understand what your argument is, only that your are throwing out flimsy and obstructive comments because you seem to be instinctively against any form of 'meddling' in the DayZ world. That's fair enough, but maybe just say you don't support the idea of a majority-versus-bandits ethos within DayZ and leave it at that?

And also accept the fact that many other people want to help DayZ evolve into a more sophisticated experience, becoming essentially a primitive post-apocalyptic society (with trading posts, currency, notoriety) rather than the current anarchic vacuum, because this reflects what would ACTUALLY happen over time to a bunch of human beings after a cataclysm, hence the many suggestions towards this goal.

mandrake you refuse to recognise Razor's repeatedly stressed point: if posters are getting put up, SOME PERSON HAS HAD TO PUT THEM UP

to elaborate

NOTHING HAPPENS IN ANY SOCIETY WITHOUT HUMAN AGENCY, STOP ASKING FOR MAGICAL GOD POWERS TO MAKE DAYZ'S SOCIETY MORE CUDDLY; CIVILISATION IS DEAD, GOD IS DEAD, THIS IS A GAME ABOUT THE REVENANT, BRAIN-MUNCHING DEAD

If anything is to happen in this game it is because the survivors (bandits included) made it happen with the tools provided, not fairies.

This is my arguement.
