Fighting zombies without guns (Sort of a melee thread, but different from others)

[TL;DR] Push/kick zombies so they stumble or just stop for a second.

Read this first I want to apologize in advance. I am on new medicine for my ADD(ADHD?) so my post not be completely articulate, as I was putting almost every thought that entered my brain on the page.

In DayZ, you run out of ammo quickly, and get your ass kicked by zombies because of it. This makes sense, because zombies are fast mother fuckers, and you don't have a weapon.

People that talk about melee typically just ask for knives to be weapons. That's a good idea, but it also would need alot more scripting and new animations. It isn't really that feasible for such a small part of the game, maybe if DayZ goes to Arma3 and is past the testing stages, but for now, not a good plan.

My suggestion is that we can push, punch[?], or kick zombies. I put a question mark around the punch because it would also need new animations. But pushing and kicking wouldn't need new animations. You could just press a button, and the zombie gets pushed a little, or stumbles, and there are already scripts for that. You don't need to see your arm pushing them or kicking them, because not being able to see your arm isn't too unrealistic, you wouldn't be moving your limbs that far from your body.

The same hatchet we get for chopping wood can be used to fight off a zombie. Sometimes when i only have one or two on me i really wish there was a way to deal with them without giving up my position to everyone in a kilometer radius.

I'm okay with losing up to 2k blood for that possiblity.

Adding the scripts and animations needed to use a knife or hatchet is too much work, and having extra scripts running would only make the game slower.

Is emulating a noiseless shot that disappears after 1 meter hard?

I don't really care for animations - it's an alpha.

Or hatchet could be used as a throwable object, but not be consumed - it's already implemented, the animation is long enough to be easily overrun by 3+ zombies and yet we get what we want.

I like the ideas (no matter how troll it could end up being if you can push/kick players off stuff).

BUT don't really see how this is different from regular melee aside from not using objects. In the end it would all need animations, seeing as you have 3rd person and even in 1st person you would see your arms/leg going forward.

As razor said though; whatever at this stage, it's only alpha and it wouldn't really bother me either way.

Btw; Could do same with knife/hatchet now. Push button and zombie gets damage.
