Raible 24 Posted August 8, 2012 In the new stand-alone, do you think they will keep the current model of being able to freely move between servers? If so, how do you stop ghosting?
Blindingsun 233 Posted August 8, 2012 Nah I think they'll bind characters to servers. hopefully.
random51 172 Posted August 8, 2012 (edited) You put in a server history and you only allow people to login to new servers, servers that they last logged out of at least 1 hour ago, or the most recent server they logged out of.That doesn't prevent server hopping itself, but it does prevent effective ghosting. 1 hour is enough to prevent most ghosting attempts. It would have to be much longer if you wanted to prevent people trying to crack fortified buildings, though, assuming the people holding the building in question planned on holding it for more than an hour. random51 172 Posted August 8, 2012 (edited) it would also prevent you from retrieiving your corpse if you got DC'd and died..No it wouldn't. It doesn't prevent you from logging into the SAME server. Read it again.1. Logout of server A.1a. Log back into server A? OK - This is your DC, relog example.1b. Log back into another server -let's call it B-? OK2. Logout of Server B.2a. Log back into server B? OK2b. Log back into server A? NOT OK. This is ghosting.2c. Log back into any server you've played on in the last hour other than Server B? NOT OK. This could be ghosting.Voila, ghosting rendered useless for most encounters. Can tweak the hour interval to find what works best. Please don't make me draw up a flowchart of this, it isn't that complex to grasp. Erik (DayZ) 61 Posted August 8, 2012 Putting a 5min delay on being able to join a server after you've left one which you've played on for more than 10-30 minutes seems like a viable option.
auridas330@yahoo.com 3 Posted August 8, 2012 World of warcraft has a 20sec wait before you can log out, so something like that should be added even if he ALT+F4 the char should be on the server for 20 seconds.
Raible 24 Posted August 8, 2012 It will be interesting to see, but it wouldn't surprise me if we see characters bound to servers.
random51 172 Posted August 8, 2012 It will be interesting to see, but it wouldn't surprise me if we see characters bound to servers.I expect public and private servers to be supported, with characters that start on private servers bound to those servers. That way people who want their private fiefdom can have it, they just can't use it to take advantage of people on public servers. The main argument against private hives at this point in time loses its weight when the mod/standalone move out of "alpha" status. konig (DayZ) 0 Posted August 8, 2012 It will be interesting to see, but it wouldn't surprise me if we see characters bound to servers. This is the most important factor of the game keeping the item aspect of the RPG elements going. Currently I partially enjoy just sitting and killing server hoppers, but it would be far more entertaining and a better game if characters were locked to servers. It would help community and it would also make the items and their drop rates properly reflected.I currently have 3 NV and 2GPS, 2 rare guns all just from sitting at NWAF and killing hoppers. I have never even seen any of the stuff I have in the world, but I have an ample supply delivered to me by hoppers. That said I would prefer if characters were locked to the server they were created on.
pesticle@gmail.com 21 Posted August 10, 2012 hopping is not a problem.people like me always camp in stary to kill those folks for fun.altf4ers are.Hopping is a problem, because some of these alt f4ers you speak of hop to another server when engaged, move to a good vantage point and get the drop on whoever engaged them. Some pathetic punks actually do this repeatedly, switching vantage points trying to snipe you and will never engage in a real firefight because of this.
