Native Language On Server?

Hey Guys

After a mass killing spree on my server a few days ago, I want to read what everyone is saying...Not that much to ask is it?

Now, my native language is English, and I have asked for all comms written in the server to be English.

I am in the process of getting my host to enable the BEC option to keep non English characters out of the chat box..

Does anyone think this is the wrong thing to do, surely it is a feasable request to be able to see what is written!

Rocket said you aren't allowed to kick/ban anyone for speaking another language.

In my opinion what you are doing is ok. But it's not something I will enforce on my server.

I never said I would kick or ban anyone for using a different language... And haven't done..

As an admin, surely I can do only do the job if I can undestand what is being said...for all I know there could be racist, abusive or even hack comments being made...

We have been having the same issue MarKeR and I will ask "our host" too, to just filter out the cyrillic etc.

My native language is Dutch and you will never see me talking Dutch on a international/european server that consists of a multitude of different languages,cultures and races.

I don't think it weird to use the most common widespread language so everyone can understand each other!

but rockets way at the moment only makes sure that the community fractures into the camps of people with the same language who just spam the sidechat... great work rocket :P

Just a warning, but rocket said he won't tolerate using BEC to filter out other languages. You will get banned from hive.

Just filtering out Cyrillic won't help, they will just transliterate everything they type, and it will be even worse for both native Russian speakers and English-speaking people, believe me. Also, how do you filter out German, Finnish, French speakers?

I beleive that forcing the players to speak only English or filtering out non-English speech is a wrong solution to a non-existent problem.

The real question is, why would you want to understand something in a global chat that is not directly intended for you? Most of those who cannot speak English and don't respect the "English only" rule are teenagers (just like most of those who are using the global chat for private communication). Do you really want to read two newbie teenagers communicating over a global chat? German, Finnish, Russian or English-speaking players are discussing asolutely the same boring things, they shouldn't do it in the server-wide channel at all.

I can't find a real reason for banning someone for using a foreign language except your xenophobia. Ignore them just like you are ignoring most English speakers in the chat, what's the problem?

Or maybe you are thinking that some people are plotting something against you in a global chat? This is kinda retarded thing for a hacker to do, don't you think?

These people won't magically learn your language if you will start banning them for not using it. If you'll silence them, the problem of language barrier won't go away.

I've kicked previously because:

A) I'd rather kick one, than ban 15 for racial insults back

B) Once they've been asked to speak in english most generally do, and the population on the server stops making "Filthy russian" type comments.

C) If they are asked to speak english, and then start accusing me of racism... well... it's not exactly racist to ask someone to speak in english is it?

I've banned people, a lot of people, for abusing foreign speakers - all i ask though is that a little effort be made by all joining to follow the language on the server.

I've set up BEC to have 300 warnings, so it's very unlikely they'll get a kick for speaking in cyrillic.

Why don't you setup Bec to kick for using latin alphabet while you're at it? HONESTLY NOBODY GIVES A FUCK unless they are racists or from Latvia. As a player I don't really fucking care if I see Cyrillic. 10% of the population are Russian let them be.

If you want to restrict someones native tongue I think its fair you get your own tongue pulled out aswell.
