Get rid of tents and storage

Recommended Posts

I get that folks enjoy building basecamps and it gives a sense of community (look at all our loot!), but death is a joke.

  1. Put down tent.
  2. Hoard equipment.
  3. Load up tent.
  4. Do whatever.
  5. Die.
  6. Return to tent for another gun and some ammo.
  7. Repeat.

Occasionally someone finds a tent and then brags about it on the DayZ forums. But hiding a tent is easy. There's no risk.

Permadeath only matters if you actually lose progress. Technically, the more you have the more you should be risking in this game. But tents and vehicle storage make it so that you only lose whatever you feel like carrying in your pockets before you did whatever got you killed.

As one player on these boards put it to another, "I don't know why it takes you an hour to gear up after dying. It takes me 15 minutes to run back to my camp and get everything I need."

Hey, he said it, not me. A significant portion of the playerbase is not experiencing anything close to risk. They've learned to completely mitigate it by punching against the boundaries of metagaming.

Want to get the tension and the danger back in the game? Remove the tents and vehicle storage completely. Tie what a character owns to the size of the backpack they wear.

Alternative options:

None. What kind of a post do you think this is?

Tents are fine or they would be if Dupeing was fixed along with tents not getting removed after a few days if your player dies.

Edit: Removing storage would also require you to remove cars/trucks because you can store stuff in them.

You know, when I'm out exploring and find a tent or 2.....

....It makes me happy. Almost like finding buried treasure.

Tents need to be left in game. I know of 5 or 6 camps with 2 - 3 tents per camp. I try to visit 1 or 2 a day. I even left loot in a tent for the guy I have been robbing these last few days.

For some people, hoarding stuff is the only meaningful activity they can come up with. Do you want to take that away from them?

duping is a problem

hoarding is not

it makes sense and allows some variation and security for people in groups

I kind of agree partially. I think the risk factor becomes too low if you have a tent full of kit from people you have been killing.

The risk factor should grow in the game else its no longer a survival game.

I don't think you should take storage away, I think storage is fine. (I personally have never used storage, so I may be talking through a hole in my head).

But I do think there should be a HUGE penalty for dying. If you you die you should loose all your stuff, and start fresh on a beach with a bandage, torch and painkillers like everyone else. Not have a warehouse full of kit to gear up with straight after you were killed.

On the home page of DayZMod.com shows the 3 steps to this game...

1. Scavenge

2. Slay

3. Survive

If you fail you should go back to step one, and start scavenging. If you are in a group or Clan then they can help gear you up with some of there stuff, but if you keep doing that then your group clan are going to see you are more of a burden.

I think storage should last for a very short time (few minutes) after your death to allow anyone close to get stuff from it before it disappears. If its a vehicle and you group are in it at the time, the maybe the fuel drains real fast giving the driver time to park up and take what ever they need from it before it...?... disappears...catches fire?

If you have tents and vehicles the your life becomes more valuable, so you should treat it as such and work harder to "SURVIVE"

both yes and no, the thing is that you dont have to run far to find a tent with tons of loot, 30 min in the north and you can gear up with snipers and NVG, and thats kinda lol

on other hand groups/clans like to have their base setup to store some stuff, so it whould be better to do something about the duping and mabye make the tents more rare

Instead of removing tents & vehicle storrage, i think it would be better to introduce other forms of character progression that can not be so easily replaced...

Gear is only step 1. With it come the Zeds. After those come the 'bandits', dealing with both is surviving. But then (and rocket mentioned this), and i think the mainpage should be changed accordingly (also @dvnt), players should 'thrive' ...

Now as long as the game is 'only' about getting gear, then if you are 'thriving' there is no game left? but the moment you introduce other kinds of characterprogression that are not so easily replaced the penatly for death is back again. So something like this suggestion: http://dayzmod.com/f...es-professions/ would totally bring back that 'oohww please don't DIE NOW!!!' feeling i have when i'm playing (as our clan only had a car once, and it got nicked or reset by the server). With such (or any other) progression system, that progression is lost, gear is only a 1.5need (after food/drinks), and the whole tension gets put back into the game for the mid-game experience :)

Tents & vehicles actually make the other half of the mid-game experience, and are a great incentive to keep playing. The clan i play with (small 3.5 people) are getting more and more familiar with the game and gearing up goes fairly easy, esp. if we are playing together. So a car (and fixed tents) is (are) what we are looking forward to atm. the tent basically to 'hoard' the things we need to build the car, and to have some gear lying around in case one of us dies. The last thing realy saves us some time getting a player geared up again, and to provide a good meeting place to group back up..

Also, once hacking and duping are fixed; durability is implemented, lootspawns are tired and tweaked, the diversity of items dropped increased (creating more presure on loottables), inventory space/toolbelt reduced, a weight/stamina system implemented (sprint less distance, so you are forced to confront infected more), you will basically need a tent to store a second gun with ammo, since you can't rely on finding more as easily as one does now. And again, with other places that provide character progression and thus loss of value on death, the tension can come from other places instead ;)

Forgot one thing, tents&vehicles also provide an added feature to the game: Random loot and repaired vehicle 'spawns' ... nothing brings a tear of joy to your eyes than finding a small encampment stached with bloodbags if you don't have any. And if there is a car at the camp, that just saved you the whole deal of having to find a wreck and repair it! ... and all that without having to code it in !!! :)

Tents are a combination training wheels and parachute.

I agree and dont agree........

Its good to be able to collect stuff (im like a magpie, collect anything shinny), but yes you do need a penelty for dieing..........

So maybe your tent(s) die with you?

Or i do like the skill level idea..... so its no good running to your tent to pick up your "new shinny" weapon if you cant use it (for example)..... get practising with it for a couple of days :)

You said he is mitigating the risk, but how do you think he managed to get the gear to stash at his camp in the first place. Assuming we are not talking about duping/hacking. Making it sound like you couldn't do it yourself. I can tell you that when our clan goes out to get more supplies for our base that there is a very real risk of danger because there are other people going to the same locations as us. Doesn't mean we have to go to Cherno or Elektro to do so...
