Action limits that feel unrealistic

*I tried 6 searches and didn't find a similar post, but suspect others have made similar suggestions...sorry for any redundancy with previous posts.*

Overall, DayZ presents you with challenges that are based in reality, like hunger, body temp, etc...However, there are times when the limitations of options to respond to these challenges feels unrealistic. Here is a list of examples...

-Cannot drink directly from a water source

-Cannot use knife to defend one's self

-Cannot forage for food, like pumpkins, pine nuts, tree fruit, etc...

-Cannot use jerry can for water

-Cannot use water canteen for fuel

-Cannot manually disable a vehicle (i.e., remove the fuel hose so no one can steal it)

-Cannot eat raw meat (fresh, raw meat is edible)

-Cannot dry meats (long before cooking, meats were dried using a tree limb and the wind to make jerky)

-Cannot administer blood pack to self (I accept this if it is entirely to promote teamwork)

I know it seems like I am asking a lot. I am sure all of these suggestions are not implementable. But, to the extent that we are presented with challenges based on reality, I think we should have the options that are also based in reality.

I agree with the filling up jerry can with water. Would be nice to fill it up with water and then fill up the canteen from the jerry can. That is what I thought it was for when I found my first I was a bit disappointed it was only for fuel.

Some kind of jerry can-to-canteen ratio makes sense to me. It is really a matter more of being able to use jerry cans for water than it is for using a canteen for fuel. Canteens for fuel would just be a way to fuel-up a small amount when in a pinch without a jerry can.

It's because they've had to adapt an engine heavily that wasn't designed for those actions. I doubt they'll bother doing anything about it and will instead concentrate their efforts on the standalone game, which by the way was officially announced today.

Most of these are reasonable enough, but not sure if their addition to the game is entirely necessary. I see a crow bar there on the ground but I am not going waste my time picking it up. The hatchet is another story, but I would rather lose zombie aggro with trees or buildings, break line of sight and crawl away than mess with a crowbar in self defense. My point being that yes it would be cool to use the hunting knife as weapon, but where do you think the damage will be with it. If I could reliable creep up on a zombie and back stab for a one shot kill, sign me up. However if the damage scales more in line with the crowbar, sorry not interested. Basically the point I am trying to make is that there are options to solve in game problems and while the exclusion of every imaginable option might be realism breaking, said exclusion is not game breaking. Still it is a bite in the ass to run past a well, fountain, pond etc. and not be able to drink straight from the source.

But, it gives those who do not have a weapon a chance to defend themselves and it gives you the opportunity to make silent kills when you do not have a hatchet.

A knife might be useful as part of a takedown system or trap construction as well.

I love the idea of the knife as a tool for 'recipe' style options. For instance, knife+cloths = bandages.

I can see it now, some guy spends fifteen days sitting on a pier with a fishing pole and a nearby well, bothering nobody, just fishing and surviving, and then some asshat with an AS50 scopes him out and blasts him for lulz.
