Is this considered unethical?

Recommended Posts

So, I was in Cherno and I disconnected from one server to go and have my dinner.

I come back and the server I was previously playing on was then full, so I select a new one, spawning in the tower that I have left the game in. Except this time ALL the exits were barbed wired off and I could hear gunshots quite nearby. It was obvious someone had made this their base.

I found quite a large stockpile of weapons, including an AK-47 with 4 magazines a PDW? (a small pistol) and several magazines for that, as well as an abundant supply of bandages.

Now, I know I'm new to DayZ, BUT I looted that building on a server with 4 people on (before it suddenly filled up) and I thought it had a lot in then, so I'm guessing someone is basing there and left their items on the floor, presuming that no-one would find them.

Obviously I picked them up (along with a Czech Backpack that was also in there) and put them into my inventory.

I then disconnected from the server, as there was no possible way for me to get out of the building (I do not have any tools as of yet).

If you were that player, I'm sorry, I would have stayed on the server (UK 173) and given you a chance of getting your items back, if you'd have just left the doors unblocked!!

If you were in the fire station, an AK does spawn there.

People do tend to block that area off to troll. Wasn't really someones base but that's some nice gear you got.

Go further North :)

Not really.

As you say, you joined that server because the one you were in was full.

Was chance that you selected that one, and you were trapped.

I don't log off in buildings, esp loot spawns. As 1) you get trapped or 2) when you connect, there is also someone else there already! :D

Sounds like you were in the firehouse and you just picked up an actual loot pile.

There's almost no way it belonged to another player, so don't worry.

Server hopping for loot (not accusing you op but in a nutshell this is the practice you are describing) may be frowned upon, but until characters and/or items are bound to server it will not stop. Might also help with the death dodging as well.

I just printed off a map so I can have my bearings. I don't have one ingame and I wanted to make sure it had the English names on as WELL as the Russian, so I don't get confused by all the roadsigns!

By north, do you mean to somewhere like Berezino or somewhere more inland like Rogovo?

I headed inland before and came to several smallish settlements, none of which had buildings you could actually go into :(

The only time I'd consider it unethical to switch servers is A) you're being shot at and you disconnect to avoid dying B) you "ghost" behind another player by switching servers to move into position behind them then switching back to get the jump on them or C) you just keep switching servers to farm one building.

What you did was perfectly fine. Looting the stuff laying on the ground is 100% fair game and leaving the server because you were trapped is fine as well. Depending on how the wire was set up you can sometimes vault over it with "V" but sometimes you can't due to the doorways not being high enough.

I think he meant North as in North West Airfield where all the phat (and some times morbidly obese) loot spawns.

I mean good loot places, so places like Stary and NW, and smaller towns/cities. You probably want to get some team mates also.

I can offer you a clan/squad. They're very friendly and will help you no matter what.

The only unethical thing you did was not shoot the prick who wired up that building lol

I agree, server hopping is part of the game right now, I'd only call it "unethical" if you do the things "ALiborio" mentioned above...

I would say hopping to loot a single building isn't even that big a deal since you run a risk of being killed while logging in everytime you do it.

FYI... disconnecting (quickly) is the only way to protect yourself from hackers right now.

Sounds like you logged off before waiting 90 seconds, which is required to save your loot.
