Respawn Totems

Recommended Posts

Some people are going to be a lot more skilled than others in this type of game. I think that there will be some "carebearing" required to keep a lot of people playing. One thing that I think would really help is something like a respawn totem (a la xsyon).

I am one of those less skilled players and can rarely survive more than an hour even if i immediately high tail it north.

No big deal I don't mind dying and losing all my shit, but it just starting to feel like every 30 minutes or so I have to restart the entire adventure. And while I enjoy running over the countryside it will eventually get very old.

What if I had the ability to drop a respawn totem with a tent or basket type of thing that stores extra supplies. So that when I die I can just start my adventure from that point and if I wanted to make it a more permanent home I can go out get supplies come back etc..

Some rules of course.

1) persists only on the server you drop it

2) can be destroyed/looted by other players

3) Ability to invite friends to respawn at that totem

4) Wipe after a couple of days

5) Ability to pick up and move it

This way I don't have to keep reliving the same (run over hills for 30 minutes) adventure every time i die.. which as i said is often..

Unrealistic, overpowered and would unbalance the game. If you want the ability to do things like this just go play Fallout 3/New Vegas. I understand that you may be frustrated at having to start from scratch each time, but that is what makes this game good, and unlike 99% of other games out there.

this game has been touted as a sandbox. I got the idea from Xyson.. which is far more sandbox than this game..

it's also a successful model..

i've also been playing darkfall for 3 years and 1 thing for sure shit that is unnecessarily frustrating will drive off 99% of the population..

also a system LIKE this opens up a lot of possibilities for turf wars and territory control..

i also didn't say shit about starting from scratch (refer to me playing darkfall for 3 years) i said starting from some random spot and having to travel 30 minutes just to get back to a point that I havent already seen 100 times.. this game you don't start from scratch at all.. in fact you start with everything you need to get by for a long period of time..

Doesn't make any sense. Permadeath keeps the game scary. I've played both Darkfall and Xyson and I don't want to see the nonsense game-y aspects of those show up here.

It's not just a sandbox, it's a milsim.

You assume that the mod's popularity is one of rocket's concerns, and... frankly, from the way he answer to criticism, i don't think he really gives a damn wether the mod is popular or not.

Rockets attitude is exactly what is making and will continue to make this mod so damn interesting.

So many developers/modders try to appease their target audience, or at least they try to move in the direction that they >think< their audience wants them to, and it usually ends up rather bland and uninteresting.

And as has been said before, the harshness of death is exactly what makes this so damn scary.

Every time I see a player I don't know, I try to avoid contact. Every time I accidentally bump into another player point-blank, my pulse literally goes crazy, and my heart jumps up into my throat. And then either him or I blow the other into a million pieces.

The most scary scenario I have ever encountered so far was a situation where a player came into a barn, and I was, by blind chance, behind some of the stacked wooden crates on the ground floor. The guy never saw me, and he left without bothering to look around the place, but I was afraid to go out of that barn and stayed in there waiting for fifteen minutes, just listening for any sound of movement.

Bottom line is, that if death wasn't as punishing as it was. If I could just respawn somewhere of my own choosing, with backup gear at the ready, this mod would be nothing at all.

The point is that it's impossible to please everyone.

No, actually it is possible, that's what the game industry at large tend to do but it doesn't lead to games that tend to be extreme like DayZ.

What we do here are mere suggestions, even if a suggestion gets a massive following, it doesn't give it any more weight than another because ultimately what we want or what is "good for the mod's popularity" doesn't matter at all.
