My Thoughts on the Youtube Commentators Attracting People to DayZ

Recommended Posts

Well, I recently started pondering the question of all those youtube commentators who are attracting people to dayz. I decided to assemble a list of the pros and cons of the influx of "noobies" into this game.

Pros:

Fresh meat, easier to kill noobies than ArmA 2 veterans.

Really gives Bohemia a shit load of money, that we all know they really deserved for making such a badass game.

Can really increase the popularity of PC gaming. Recently, PC gaming has kind of fell down in the dumps, as no one cares about us anymore. With the release of DayZ, however, we finally get the publicity we all know PC gaming deserves.

Cons:

A lot of those commentators are BF3 and CoD veterans who wanted to try their hand out at this game. Those BF3 and CoD players really promote the kill on sight aspect of the game, both in game and in their videos. (I don't have anything against CoD and BF3, as I think they are both gun games, but if you don't do any research into this game, and go to it immediately after playing CoD, you'll think everyone is fair game).

The noobies are also usually alt-f4ers, and some of them can be hackers. Neither of which we need in this game.

That's all I can think of, ATM. Please comment so I can read your thoughts on this.

In your pros you say "easier to kill noobies" and in your cons you talk about the "kill on sight mentality"....kind of ambiguous.

It doesn't matter what their playstyle is. It matters what the people who watch streams/youtube find interesting.

If most of those people didn't find hardcore pvp interesting they wouldn't continue to watch those streams. They'd switch to watching the boring PvE streams. Right? If the PvE streams were more interesting, more entertaining, wouldn't we be seeing an influx of people who were interested in that playstyle? Right?

Curiously enough neither of those are happening, are they? Should tell you something about the REAL market for this game.

The simple fact of the matter is that the "good old days" so many claim for this mod was based upon ignorance. People didn't know how to survive, they didn't have everything online in wikis, they didn't have maps, they didn't have full equipment lists. That is what made them more likely to work with other players, less likely to pursue PvP. Knowledge is power and most of them were powerless.

Nothing will bring that back. You can't stuff the knowledge genie back in the bottle.

Things are different today. Most of those original players, at least the ones who still play know all there is to know about survival in Chernarus. Survival vs. PvE threats has become subconscious, a daily chore, basically work they have to do every now and then so they can spend the rest of their time having fun. What is the only challenge left to them in DayZ? Why its the most dangerous animal of all, their fellow humans.

This existing population of experienced hunters makes it rough on new players. The wealth of knowledge posted in wikis, youtube, any number of forums allows the current crop of players a leg up the original ones didn't have which somewhat counterbalances the increase in PvP, though. Yes there are more human predators, but the starting players---at least the ones smart enough to do research outside of the game---aren't completely clueless about survival in Chernarus.

Long story short, the playerbase of DayZ is evolving. Trying to stifle that evolution with gameplay systems that limit freedom isn't going to make the mod better. It isn't going to attract more players. It is going to drive away the core audience for what is currently the best hardcore open world pvp survival---best? more like only---game out there.

I can tell you right now that isn't going to happen. The market for the boring PvE zombie game is a crowded one. The market for the exciting hardcore PvP open world survival game? That's what they call an untapped market. That is where the money is. That is why you see that crowd of FPS gamers/streamers leaving their highly polished, AAA shooters to stream a mod in Alpha, on top of a game whose interface could only be loved by a European engineer. It's new, it's different, it's unique. I think we should keep it that way.

You're wrong, I started playing after watching comentators videos. I'm friendly when I can, but someone's armed... he's going down!

It's simple, it's not what some people don't want to be friendly, they just can't. When I see someone armed with a weapon, I don't think to myself "maybe he's friendly?", I can't afford thinking that, so I avoid them, if I cant avoid them, they die, or I die.

Comentators play what they like, I like hardcore PVP, "hunting the ultimate game" and so on... it's fun, after a while you get bored of all the zombies, plus when you gather equipment, is it just for show?

I can't take these kind of threads seriously.

They're full of sterotyping and profiling based on absolutely no facts.

The CoD kid thing is an insult used by people who insult main stream games for being popular. Same thing happens with mainstream music.

It's just dumb.

This.

I happen to be one of those newbies who came from a commentery seen on youtube, not only the commentator was actually pretty friendly, i actually never played a fps game before and the video just lured me into the game.

I dont know about pvp, but im a good survivor and rather a friendly one.

Terrible OP with no thought behind it at all or very little. Alt+F4's = Cod kids kills your whole thread. Invalidates your whole thread and makes you look stupid.

No one demographic ruined your game. Everyone was a noob at this game once. The learning curve is steeper than cod but it's not impossible to learn. You get no magic cookie because you think your pro now.

You are just a number a statistic along with your supposed cod kids. That data collected for alpha testing does not show up as cod kid/ pro dayz player who makes stupid threads denouncing cod players.
