They were keeping track of different records; such as time survived, murders, zombies killed, bandits killed, etc.

I don't know why they were taken down though.

Maybe.

I know that the devs were interested in establishing a kind of "armory" style system to show player stats attached to our forum profiles; like number of survival attempts and your humanity, etc. Maybe they took it down to develop that? I really am not sure.

They seemed meaningless from my perspective. Scores carry over to every leaderboard you touch, even if the score was achieved elsewhere.

And the legitimacy of top scorers, what with Alt +F4s and hacks, is highly questionable.

One less reason to encourage illegitimate play (no matter how small) sounds like it outweighs the moot point of a kill-count competition right now.

I've been alive 70 days, I'm literally just waiting for the leaderboards to come up so I can check how many hours my characters actually been alive. That may be sad but what else do I have to work towards when I have all the best gear? Bring back the leaderboards so I can check and let this old veteran die and start off afresh!

I would agree with this. It's probably for the best that they are not up right now do to recent... issues.
