Whoa, Group Chat Works?

So, randomly while sitting in the lobby to eat some food. I heard someone talking over Group Chat in the Lobby.

Now I know when a server first comes up, you can type and talk through group chat-- But it appears that even afterwords you can type to people or ask for help. (So long as they are in group chat also via lobby)

I found this pretty interesting and it startled me. Maybe this will help a few players out. Its certainly no side-chat however.

I always wondered, could everyone hear group chat before global chat was removed? I remember pre-removal that me and some other dude both killed each other and we could talk to each other in group chat on the death screen.
