Can't hear distant sounds

When playing with my friends, it's a constant "did you hear that shot?", and me going, "No, I didn't hear anything." My soundcard is fairly old, but so are other's that I play with. It's a Soundblaster XtremeGamer, with a Creative Fatal1ty headset.

Basically i'm just curious if there are any setting tweaks to pickup background noise better.

Get hearing Aids? =P No I feel the same way! Just turn up your headphones and everything and hope for the best

I'd blow out my eardrums from rain, or walking :/

The sounds just don't seem to register.

Your hardware's fine.

Have you installed the creative console launcher? Try playing with the settings in that. Run a sound test using the software (its quite detailed). Try swapping between entertainment & game mode.
