Multiple players with same profile?

So i was wondering if it was possible to have 2 or more different players on the same profile. My friend and i both just started playing the game but we share a computer. I noticed that when i made my player after he played for a while it was like i was playing his player, (same stats/equips/location). i dont want to die while i am playing and have him lose all of his hard earned stuff. Can we have different players that are not synced together? or am i asking the impossible?
