Ammunition - How deep do we need to go?

Recommended Posts

Ammunition and firearms. How complex do we want to get?

This game already does a stellar job by having a variety of firearms, calibers, and information about calibers etc. Yet there is a lot more that could be done without making the game cumbersome and super-realistic. Some of these items might already be in plan, but I'll just state them here anyway.

-Treat magazines like water bottles and jerry cans. They hold ammo and can be easily refilled during downtime after combat with a single (refill mags) button.

-Give players an ammo box that holds a certain amount of ammo. They can fill it up by emptying mags that they find on players, taking ammo from players' ammo boxes, or looting boxes of ammo around the map.

-Several ammo calibers can fit in different mags. If I find an M249 belt/can, I should be able to move some/all of that ammo into my STANAG magazine. The same goes for Glock mags, M9 mags, and any other 9mm mags.

-Allow players to apply different holsters and slings to their firearms. A 1-point or 3-point sling should allow a player to switch between their rifle and their sidearm more quickly.

-Allow players to carry more than one long-arm, at a price. How does anyone fit a rifle inside of a backpack anyway? Long arms should be unable to fit in a backpack, and instead should fit on players' backs as long as your primary long-arm is in your hands. The down side is that you have to drop your primary long-arm on the ground if you want to switch to your pistol (unless you have a 1-point or 3-point sling). You can switch to the secondary long-arm if you want, but the same rules apply as switching to your pistol. Carrying a secondary rifle should slow your jog down at least enough that runner zombies can catch you.

-Allow players to carry dual pistols if they have the proper holsters. Accuracy should go way down, and reloading should take longer. All of the fools who want to look cool with dual pistols would have to pay for the privilege. (Heck... I'd do it) This isn't Counter Strike.

-Firearms with tube magazines should load like it. The Winchester should load one round at a time (it also shouldn't fire slugs, it should fire .44-40 Winchester rounds, but I think they're working on that since they eliminated Winchester pellet rounds). Additionally, Winchester ammo and Shotgun ammo should be a pile of ammo rather than be treated like a magazine. Reloading could possibly be made faster with a bandoleer item or shotgun ammo pouch, but that would eventually need to be re-filled to benefit from the reloading increase.

-If you reload your firearm before the last round is fired, there should still be one round in the chamber. When you load a full fresh mag on top of that, you'll have the magazine capacity + 1.

I could go on and on, but I'll leave it at that for now. Here's hoping that they implement one or more of these ideas. I know it's not a priority right now, but keep it in mind for the future.

tl;dr

Make ammo and firearms behave more like they do IRL, but not so much that it's annoying to deal with.

PS: Add the Sig P226, 33 round Glock mags, more Glock variants. Variety is the spice of life. :D

I agree with a lot of this but not all of it ;), almost made a post the exact same. though some of the stuff you are talking about, are not even that way in ACE witch is pretty much real life. I think Arma has it's limits on how much you can mod it.

Also there is a post around here, thats talking about a mod called "STMovement". in it you can switch to your pistol, and have your rifle resemble the actions of a rifle on a 1 point sling.

I think this would mainstream the firearms in the game and would be quite nice

These would be modifications to ArmA2 itself, not DayZ.

At least ArmA2's current system is fairly realistic, within reason. After a while this shit would just get too complicated to worry about. You've got to remember that most ArmA games don't have the incredible limits on ammunition that you find in DayZ... most Warfare games you'll find crates that have 300 STANAGs in them.

Most of these suggestions were brought up when ArmA2 was originally released.
