TheCaptn (DayZ) 12 Posted May 25, 2012 I'm not really going to argue about the -wisdom- of doing this, but I've got my tent set up far enough away from the coast that I feel like it's a risk worth taking:Campfires only last a few minutes and, bugs notwithstanding, you need a size-2 inventory item to start one. At my campsite I'd like to have a more long-term light source, and an ability to hunt/cook game multiple times at my own camp.So would it be possible to run a check on campfire placement, and if it's within say, 5m of a tent, the timer is set to something like an hour? That way we'll have the time to cook marshmallows -and- tell ghost stories on a single pile of wood. :D

Bandit Hunter 29 Posted May 25, 2012 If you have a tent, load it up with firewood you find while scavenging. Unless your burning the tent itself for fuel, there is no wisdom behind long lasting fires around camp tents, as you stated. Perhaps as another suggestion, Rocket could add random loot spawns in forest areas that only produced firewood.
TheCaptn (DayZ) 12 Posted May 25, 2012 there is no wisdom behind long lasting fires around camp tents' date=' as you stated.[/quote']See, I don't consider that to be an argument against the suggestion. A large part of the appeal in this game is in allowing things which might be potentially unwise, like running with flares; but which either add to the atmosphere and immersion, or which have some tangible benefit to gamble on.Having a long-lasting campfire at an established campsite would offer all three possibilities. It's definitely atmospheric, and it can help make a random spot on the edge of a forest feel a little more like home, while also providing a more established cooking utility, and creating a beacon in the dark to help you locate your own equipment if you've wandered away for some reason (like a nighttime scouting trip).Yes it might draw in bandits like flies to the proverbial, or attract itinerant walkers (when they're added), but that's the risk you'd have to weigh up for yourself. It might equally offer respite to an exhausted survivor who ends up being your bestest bud... Although that's a little less likely. :D
SkepticJerry 0 Posted May 25, 2012 Put a limit on matches for starting a fire. Have the fire burn say, 10 minutes. If someone is there, they can click on the fire and select "tend fire" and it will burn for another 10 minutes. Other options could be "cook meat", "warm self", "dry clothes" etc.... If they leave, it goes out after 10 minutes and if they forget to tend it, then it goes out and you have to use another match to start it again.
