Making DayZ Videos Faster Paced.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm an active YouTuber and have wanted to make DayZ videos for some time, the problem I had with this is that the game is very slow paced and I feel it could get quite boring to watch. I feel that I have fixed this problem by speeding up the "boring" sections where I am travelling from to place to place by 4x. I think this has made a massive improvement to my videos. The first episode to the new series is below of you want to check it out.

Thanks for watching and I look forward to receiving your feedback. Also, if you want to be notified when I upload more then subscribe. If you want to show your support even more then you can like and favourite the video, and finally, if you comment on this thread it will help more people see it.

Thanks for taking your time to read this and I will see you in the next video.

I never make it through a DayZ video. If I have the spare time to watch a DayZ video, I usually get the urge to log on and actually play. I suggest keeping yours to 6-7 mins, as well as speeding up the slow parts. It'll keep others interest up and make watching multiple videos easier.

Personally, Im not a big fan of most of the DayZ videos, as they tend to be around the 15-minute mark.

That is more from the nature of the game, as you say.

I agree with you, I am not a fan of long videos either. But many people must like the longer videos because there is a still a pretty large amount of DayZ traffic going around on YouTube atm. I intend to keep the long length of the videos but hopefully cram more of the good stuff in by speeding up the dull parts.

I think it's better to cut out the boring sections with a crossfade rather than speed them up. 15 minutes of just running through trees at 4x is still 4 minutes of just running through trees. Just cutting it out makes every break in the action the same length, and avoids advertising the sheer amount of running, as the viewer won't know if you've cut out 2 minutes or 20.

That said, sometimes a very "dull' moment in Day Z can be a very tense one. When you see a faraway treeline and get that feeling and the hair on the back of your neck raises as you hit the deck and scan along it, you can show that. Leave commentary out and let your character's heavy breathing raise the hairs on the viewer's neck as well.

Also, the first 2 minutes of this video is you showcasing the game's bugs. Aside from being a bad ambassador, you undermine the intensity of the rest of your video by opening up with broken immersion.

Your audio doesn't match up. For example, at 4:35, you're standing still on a road, but the audio is still from you running on grass. This is likely sloppy editing related to the time compressed bits.

Yeah, the immersion breaker at the start is hard to avoid. It would be pretty strange if I just ignored them. The cross-fades are a good idea, but it does make it feel more like a highlight video rather than a "lets play".

I think I will defo swap to doing cross-fades anyway, thanks for the input.

Like the videos my friend, I was interested to see how other players handled situations, I agree about the slow moving parts in videos as well. For me personally there's a time and a place to move cautiously! some guys don't understand however that's the beauty of this mod, making your own decisions based on the current situation is what drives dayz.

keep the video about human interactions and behaviors.

one of the example i can think of the top of my head is a 1 minute video of a guy getting backstabbed for a tent.

also btw youtube change the view policy or something based on video percentage. i think a person have to watch past 7:30 min of a 15 min to count as a view. what does this mean? if you create short 1 minute video there is more chance of people getting past the 50 percent mark since its only 30 sec granting you a view. the more views a video gets the more chance of people watching it.

Yeah, I also think that human interaction is the best thing about DayZ. Also, do you mind posting your sources about the new views system, I would like to read about it myself.

One tip I could think of is just play, edit out the boring stuff and commentate on things after the fact. This way you can generally make a much more interesting and concise video that people will want to watch from beginning to end. Also if you have the time try making some type of cinematic video, they are fun little projects to do from time to time.

Something I made when I was bored last year, people generally like this kind of stuff.
