Are people that run servers allowed to turn it off and on whenever they want to play?

My group of friends had several base locations and supplies on US 810, one night we discovered an area full of tents. We took the most valuable loot and ran over the remaining tents with our van. I know this isn't the most ethical thing to do, but it happens. We ran into the owner of the base on the way out; a group member of ours was shot off the back of a motorcycle shortly afterwards. I found the nearest road in our van and went as fast as I could. I hid the van in some trees and listened for any other vehicles approaching; after about 5 minutes the server shut down. The server will come on at random times early in the morning for a few hours, then shut off. I just want to know if this kind of behavior is permitted. This is an awesome game and an even more original modification, I really appreciate all of the time and effort that has went into it and don't want to lessen the experience of another player from this post.

I dont believe so.

But most of the crappy admins on here will do it, and say some lame excuse (We are doing maintenance on it) Which they likely are not, cause there is really nothing they need to do that will take hours. Just a way for them to farm gear.

in general, community-run servers do not provide an uptime guarantee..

admins spend their money and time to setup and manage the servers, and with a patch-heavy game like DayZ it can be a PITA..

some may run servers only for a few hours per day, because the bandwidth is allocated to other services during the rest of the time.. some may take it down regularly for updates or because there is a server-side issue.. its not always ill will. as the reasons behind downtime are not determined, and no service level agreement exists, there is no reason to punish server admins for downtimes..

edit: If the server owner/manager reads this I can donate if you're having any kind of financial issues.

No it's not allowed as Ander stated in one of the recent threads in the announcement section. But having a server go down for a chunk of time can easily be blamed on a crash etc, rather then the Admin shutting it down. Unless they explicitly state that's what they're doing, then you just don't know.
