Will i like this if I dont really like ARMA?

Recommended Posts

I have never been big into military sims but saw this mod and it looks ridiculously awesome. Arma 2 is on sale on Amazon right now and I was thinking of picking it up mostly to play this(I would try out Arma again as well). Im thinking I would like it just because they play so differently.

So my question is this, if I didnt like Arma is it safe to say I wont like this?

Did you play Arma and not like it? Or Arma 2?

The game has come a long, long, loooooong way forward, especially in MP optimization if it's been a few years since you last played.

I'd say give it another chance as this mod can be both very rewarding and very aggravating.

Some of the things I didnt like about Arma 2 was that it felt a little clunky to me(I didnt give it much time so maybe its just a getting use to thing), but the thing that always got me was that everytime I seemed to come around a corner I would get one-shot from someone I have no idea where they are. I dont mind taking my time and playing tactically, because I know this isnt CoD but it seemed hard

I redownloaded to free version so maybe ill give it another shot.

Give it another chance.

At first I was like "wtf this is so clunky and hard to use..."

That was 5 years ago...now I am totally in love with Arma.

It's definitely worth the patience.

I never quite got into ArmA 2 either, played 2 hours and got bored. I hoped Operation Arrowhead would change my opinion but it didn't, same scenario, played for 2 hours and I got bored. Never really got a change to try proper multiplayer because my clan was never interested in it.

I have however sunk countless hours into DayZ already and loved every minute of it. I even got most of my clan to play it too so I'd say certainly give it a shot. The mod just plays and feels completely different to me, if you're looking to buy it though I think steam might have a better deal. I bought ArmA 2:CO (original and OA in one pack)for one of my friends for 25 euros ($30 ?)

ArmA is the game that will kill other games for you. You can do RTS, RPG, FPS, Tac Sim, and now MMO.

Is ArmA clunky....... yes, but seriously, vanilla isn't that bad, people are just lazy because they are used to BF3 or COD where you only need like 12 functions. It's not like ArmA has a million, you seriously only need your mouse wheel and like 10 mapped keys.

I think the scrolling through freaks people out for some reason.

Add in ACE and you just get a second menu which is just like the vanilla one to use, but you need 2 mapped keys to use the ACE menus. 2!!! How hard is that?

Are the animations good? No, it doesn't even have PhysX. Does it look as polished as BF3? No, but it's also like 100 times the size and has a huge modding community.

Is the sound shit? Yeah it's awful, but we have mods for it.

Graphics? Not bad if you have a boss system, also don't like the explosions....... got a mod for that too.

Bottom line, what I tell people: "If you've ever played a real flight sim like IL2 or DCS, you know buttons are a pain, ArmA is nowhere near as bad as a high end CFS, but it's still not for lazy people".

Btw, all the horror stories about the bugs in ArmA 2 are true. But they fixed almost all of them in Operation Arrowhead, and the latest patches have fixed the super-AI that used to be able to snipe you with an old AK at 600m with iron sights while you were behind a tree.

ArmA 2 Combined Operations is a great game, but don't play solo. The best is having a group of players to play with. The Single play is all about controlling the AI, which is still kinda of clunky. The best advice I can give you for that is don't tell groups to go somewhere or do something. Select individual units and you'll avoid traffic jams and general AI idiocy.

Got to keep your head on a swivel, watch your environment.

Do you have Track IR laying around? How about triple screens? Better yet, both!

make sure you know what's in front and back of you, who's flanking you and where they are coming from. Use the lean function around corners. If you go prone while being shot at, roll a couple times to one side or the other. Try to pop up where you're not expected to be.

If you can put up the A2's engine and how the player character handles then the only problem lies with if you can handle the game itself. DayZ is a bit unfriendly towards new guys. Expect to die a lot and at the hands of other players. Yea you might find some friendly guys, but that is not to be expected. If you can't handle the idea of being killed by other players seemingly for no reason and losing a lot of your good gear, then it won't be a good idea to get this mod.

As others have mentioned, try some more A2Free to make sure that the engine itself won't bug the crap of you. If you don't mind the quirks of the A2 engine, and your computer can sufficiently handle it, then you might be interested in trying this mod out. You have to remember that this is first and foremost Arma, with a layer of modifications on top of it that only introduce some new features, but doesn't change any core Arma components.
