Frustrated With FPS/Performance, Need Help

Recommended Posts

Long before I got DayZ, I got my Asus N53S (maybe N53SV, still not exactly sure) notebook and I was satisfied with the way it performed on some games. TF2 and CSS ran at great framerates, and I was happy. However, even on some games that don't really require a LOT, my performance becomes iffy. So, my frustration is that DayZ has an FPS Value way below what I think it should be and what the nvidia website expresses. I benchmarked today and I got around 15-25 FPS, and I was mainly in little towns, and maybe one or two big towns (however, the gameplay is still pretty smooth). I have an NVIDIA Geforce GT 540m CUDA 1gb graphics card (which computer selling websites and nvidia is say is a good card). Here are my specs (I used Speccy and copy pasted):

Operating System

MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

CPU

Intel Core i5 2430M @ 2.40GHz 51 °C

Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology

RAM

6.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)

Motherboard

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. N53SV (CPU 1) 49 °C

Graphics

Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)

(Illegal Vendor ID)

Hard Drives

596GB Western Digital WDC WD6400BPVT-80HXZT1 (SATA) 35 °C

Optical Drives

Slimtype BD E DS4E1S

Audio

Realtek High Definition Audio

The graphics that were default were the Intel HD 3000 Graphics, but I quickly switched the default gpu to the NVIDIA card. I have also added both arma 2 and arma 2:oa to the list of programs to use my geforce on. I have watched and read several guides to improve performance and they helped in some way (thank you to whoever made those guides). My big fear in this situation is that all along, I have never really been using my Nvidia Geforce GT 540m, but I have only been using my Intel HD 3000 Graphics (even though I added arma 2 and oa to the list of programs to use the nvidia processor). How can I be absolutely sure that I am running DayZ/Arma2/Arma2:OA on my NVIDIA Processor? What should I be getting FPS wise with these specs and graphics? My video settings are mostly very high, except for hdr (normal), object detail (normal), shadow (off), AA (off), Antroscopic Filtering (off), etc.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me (you'll have my beans) as I am extremely frustrated and almost considered buying a whole new graphics card from their newest line of products and buy like 4gb more ram, which I am never going to do though.

Lower some of the core video settings (texture detail) and set your video memory usage to very high. That seems to work for me.

Okay, I'll go ahead and try that, but I think I have already done so somewhere along the line. Also, some guide told me that If you have more than 512mb (default ram for arma 2, i think), then you should put video memory usage on default. I'll go set it back to very high though. Thanks for your help, but I think I'm going to need more than some setting changes to solve the entire problem.

It varies from person to person, but i found without it set to very high my fps is never stable. To be honest, the only way your going to get a steady high frame rate is by spending a large amount of money on a reliable desktop. Just tinker around a little with the settings until you find the optimal settings for your PC.

Thanks for your help Scutticus. I know that Arma2 isn't really optimized that well to get good performance, and now I know that a large increase in performance is probably going to result in spending a good amount of money. At least I know what the problem could be. As promised, you have my beans!
