Why is server switching even allowed? What is the logic behind that decision?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Currently you are able to create a character in one server and continue playing with the same character in other server. My question is what is the logic behind this and why is it even allowed? This creates loads of server hopping and drastically reduces game play value.

I wish that there could be only 1 char per server and if you die you have to start again. Currently when DayZ has become so popular players are just alt+f4 and change to different server and continue from there. This is not a huge issue but the whole principle of ability on changing server for your character seems way off.

Thanks,

It's like in real life. When you are finding bad loot from shop, you just initiate the exit sequence and change to different dimension.

I thought that was common knowledge.

Well, mainly because this is a mod, and changing how the mod works would cause quite a few issues.

A lot of the exploits that are occurring are being logged and fixed with the Hive. This is in Alpha and like everyone says, if this game goes to standalone, issues like this will be fixed.

I don't approve of pricks server-hopping in the middle of combat, alt f4'ing, or even hopping just to find good loot. Howeverthere are things that are necessary for you to server hop. Things like lag on the server (when more people join) or technical issues in general. I've logged in and out more since the patch that logs it all than ever. Simply because hackers seem to be more common now. The game is in a chaotic state in both the developers eyes and in ours. I suppose we should just relax, keep complaining, and watch the dev team fix it. So far they've done a pretty good job ;D

Well if avarage life expectancy is about 1hour then changing the server would't be a problem after you have died if there is lag and or hackers.

And my question is still unanswered. Why is the logic or principle of creating a global character even exist?

Per-server character might work if the servers were owned and run by the game company, rather than by players or other third party's. Would suck losing a character youve worked hard on and survived long with to admin abuse or if for instance, they shut the server down because they got bored or something similar.

think of the huge amount of crap the hive would have to save. If 900000 players create 5 charakters on different servers^^

I have an idea, but it would probably suck to program in. When people first join a server they can check out if it is a good one (spawn in as a goat in a random place and have a 1 minute limit to prevent goat spies). Then, if the server is good, the player can decide to join the game as their character. Once joining, the person would be unable to join a different server for 30min or 1hour(unless the server goes down).

But the whole idea of Hive would not be even needed anymore. All could be done 3rd party server side.

I understand that there could be option to save your char and then go through a character transferring bureaucracy to get your char to a new server if for example the server is down and/or empty for some reason but ability to change servers every 5 minutes seems totally ridiculous and game breaking feature. It does't add up to the whole Survival experience and creates huge stress on servers and pipeline.

What happens when a servers full and you and your friends cant join? You want to sit around for 2 hours trying to get in, or would u rather go join another server? Being able to carry your stats and items with you allows u continuity of play wherever you go, rather than ending up with several half-assed characters all over the place.

There are better ways of preventing combat logging and server hopping rather than a brute force method such as seperate characters per server.

It's just that there isn't anything to prevent it in the game yet. Offer us a suggestion as to how to prevent it elegantly?

The current way is just fine. No matter how any game or mod is set up, there will always be a few to "expolit" some aspect of the game that others think is cheap. I will switch servers under a few conditions:

1- There server I am on is full and my friend is trying to join

2- The server has too much lag and is making the game unplayable

3- I have switched servers as well to find a day time server when I am starting out. When it gets so dark that nothing I can do allows me to see, I'll switch. Although some people play all day, there are many of us who have jobs/kids/family so we play when we have time. If it happens to be night, switch to play a day server.

I think the overall having 1 charcter that can switch servers is fine. Tents can stay on one server how it is. I am not seeing a need to regulate this.

The reason is quite elaborate and needs some extrapolation of things rocket has said in interviews ... the main thing is him mentioning comming to something akin to an Eve Universe. Now while eve seems to be one big world, the server structure behind it is all but, each server may host one or a couple of starsystems (depending on the amount of people in those systems, and related to the amount of connections a server can handle.

So my hunch is that Rockets would like to put the whole world into the game, where every server hosts one (or a couple) of area's of the world, and once you get to the edge of the map, instead of entering wasteland, you enter another map, and to make this function well, it's fairly likely you will switch servers as you cross onto another part of the world. Obviously you will want to keep all your stuff once you cross servers... Now for a one map place i can agree, it doesn't seem to make much all the time, then again, i think it's fairly cool that you can continue your game on another server if the one you happened to have played on is full ... that is a nice feature, but in my views the actual reason is not just that, it's keeping the future option open to create a full blown world hosted by many servers and having these link together so that the player doesn't even notice which server he is on, all that matter is that he can play and have the stuff he collected sofar...
