Respawning with a living character

Hey everyone. This is my first post, and I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. Quite frankly, I don't know if this is a bug with the game, or if I'm doing something wrong, but twice now today, (july 31, 2012) I logged out of a server after playing for a bit, and when I logged back in(whichever server had a decent ping, and 5-10 players) I would suddenly be presented with the option to create a male or female character, and would be starting the game with a new character! I'm not sure WHAT the hell is happening there, but now it's happened again, and I've lost a character where I was finally making some progress :(

Any idea's?

Maybe you've been playing in a private server.

You have to be careful about that.

Private server doesn't sync with the Main DayZ hive server.

Which means you're character is saved in the private server you have been playing in.

I think there's a bug causing something like that or you joined a private server which doesn't use the global Hive to save your progress. These servers are usually named "custom hive, private hive, non hive".

Just try again with definitely official server.

Well that sucks. Is there any specific way to tell a private server from an official one? Or do I just hope that they SAY so in the descriptions?

Well, in my case i usually find servers that doesn't show me the 'choose your gender' window.

I think the private servers have "@hive" in their description below(not the title)
