Arma 2, Arma 2 AO (I suggest from Steam) then DayZmod. Run each Arma in admin first before installing DayZ.

No, you don't have to pay to play the mod. You will have to pay so you can use the engine the mod is for.

If you are cheapskate, you can save 10€~ by using Arma 2 free (also called demo some places). But you will have to pay for Arrowhead no matter what.

If you use Arma 2 free, you will have a horrible textured version, but is about 1 gig instead of 8 gigs.

If you are still interested, i would suggest you buying the game of BIS website (you can buy a steam key from there, but more money goes to the devs)

I do recommend getting the Combined ops pack, If you don't ragequit first time you die, and take the time to improve and learn. It should be a worthwhile purchase.

If you are more conservative with your money; Wait for the standalone version or WarZ if that is your cup o' tea.
