Bohemia Interactive + DayZ : I R Confused!

BI + DayZ: I Am Confused

Why the heck isn't BIS jumping at the chance to make DayZ the game?

The number of sales from ArmA 2 in the last 3.5 months...

The continuing increasing popularity of the mod...

The incredibly obvious demand and support for DayZ as a standalone game...

I just don't get it! What's holding BI back from making this game?

I'd sure they'd like to, but the mod has to be turned into a game, its avery long way away from a solid standalone game that delivers what is should and could.

Also legal issues of licensing, Their code to Rocket, Rockets game to their publishing arm etc.

Add to that ARMA 3 is a few months from release, they haven't got the staff to divert to coding a DayZ game. It would be a huge financial ask and risk to code two games in tandem at the same studio.

Not to mention Rocket may have a hard time putting claims to owning the concept of such a pop culture themed game. And ARMA is showing DayZ might be better off on a different engine.

What does everyone think?

Would you like to see BI take up the project and put their man power behind DayZ?

Personally, I would love to see BI be the one.

They're perfect for it. Not only for the obvious reason of DayZ currently being a mod on their engine but for the type of game that Rocket wants DayZ to be - it fits with BI. MilSim masters now with the added SurvivalSim masters notch to their belt.

You guys have to realize that were playing a mod. If this were a game in developement, at the stage we are playing it in, it wouldn't even see public release like this. We are in the stage of finding and fixing bugs. So our sole purpose as a community is to report the bugs we find during gameplay, and to offer gameplay ideas to improve the mod so that when it becomes a game it can be the best game possible.

Yes sir, it is a mod that we are continuously testing, correct. A mod, in alpha, that the creator would like to make a standalone game. It has reached a point where continuing to develop it as a mod is a pointless act and a waste. The focus, with it's current numbers and demand, should be on making it the game it will be. Rocket wants it to be a standalone game. He is already entertaining offers from companies/studios to do exactly that. The question now lies in which one it will be.

I'm not at all excited about a standalone game. I think DayZ is an accident, Like Equilibrium or Boondock Saints. Rocket had an idea for a game, and tried to make it with the tools at hand. The blend of his vision and the restrictions he faced wound up being very, very popular, but if he made a standalone game, where he could fully realize his vision, who's to say that the "correct" DayZ won't be utter garbage compared to this buggy, clunky, shoddy thing we currently enjoy? I don't think he can do it. My plan is to let DayZ's pride precipitate its fall, then buy ArmA3 and see what the modding community builds out of that.

Seriously, who's going to build a big-budget video game that's got good graphics and a deep engine and expensive marketing, but still has five pages of keybindings and pitch-black nights and no explanation for why your sniper rifle's crosshairs only very rarely point at where your bullet is going to hit? Is anyone going to stand at a podium and say, "Okay, here's our new game, we're very proud of it and we think that you'll like playing it, but you'll need to spend about 40 hours on the wiki and forums figuring out how to fix vehicles and use mil dots, or else you'll just be getting wrecked and crying and that hurts my ears."

Yeah, Minecraft made a killing despite not really telling anyone how to play, but that game is crazy simple compared to this one. This is closer to Dwarf Fortress, and that game's not selling any million copies any time soon. Tarn can barely afford Dr. Pepper on the donations he gets.
