... where we found an ATV and got ambushed

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So my buddy and I logged in near Polana, where we had left the game last time. We tend to roam the wilderness instead of big cities, so the supermarket there is always worth a trip. I had been on a solo trip the evening before, where I got lucky and scored my first coyote backpack, my first NV goggles, and an awesome FAL AN/PVS-4 (stumbled over a helicrash during heavy rain on my way back). My buddy had his beloved DMR with him, and I was eager to try out the M4 CCO I had taked from an unknown player corpse before.

We decided to head for Altar, since I had seen an UAZ there on another server. Naturally, we didn't have such luck this time, but only seconds after we made sure that there really wasn't any vehicle, my buddy shouted "Players!" and we went prone. They approached from the east, apparently two of them. The damn terrain blocked our vision for a clean shot, so we waited behind the trees near the house until they ran by to get them from behind. Seemed like they were heading for the NW airfield because they were running like hell. So we circled the house from the north, only to realize that there was a frickin helicrash like 200m away from the house? Screw those players, we decided to go for the heli instead because we didn't have much ammo for the FAL, also my buddy wanted his own NV goggles.

So we waited, hoping that those guys hadn't seen the heli while running down the other treeline. After a while, we approached the site, using the conveniently placed hay bales as cover. Zombies spawned and we discussed how to do this with us being just two guys, daytime on the server, and loud weapons at hand. My friend climbed the haystack on the field to get a better view and spotted one of the other guys laying in the opposite treeline. Since that guy didn't look at him that moment, my buddy shot him. We spend a few minutes spotting the trees, not knowing where the remaining player had gone. Eventually I went for the corpse, only to get shot from the west, where Mr. Ghillie hat been hiding. So I respawned somewhere in the ocean near Otmel, while my friend managed to kill the sniper, only to realize that there was yet another guy, who ran for the house from the north (we think he was alone and just spotted the heli). After my buddy shot him as well he had quite a few zombies on his ass, and some running and hiding ensued. But he lived, got back to the corpses, and took the most valuable stuff. I was running like crazy to get back to the heli in time, with only a short stop at our small camp to grab some basic equipment. But the server we played on had different plans and went off while I was half-way (been offline ever since). Damn it.

We decided to log in on a nighttime server, to make the most out of the NV goggles (my buddy kept them for the time being) and the FAL AN/PVS-4 (which I took). We went for Stary to make up for some of my missing gear. City was empty and I searched the tents. Much to my surprise, I found another coyote backpack. Since my buddy had spotted some chemical lights in the supermarket, we decided to leave it at that and go for the NW airfield instead. We walked to Dichina to get a good overview over the fields, since we were pretty sure that other players travelled the area as well (tbh, we also hoped to spot another heli, but you didn't get that from me), but the landscape looked empty.

Without any further incident we made it to the southern barracks of the NW airfield but didn't find anything special. Due to the zombie count having dropped dramatically (like 30 zombies max.), we guessed that the airfield had to be clean of other players for the moment. When we headed for the northern barracks, my buddy spotted an intact ATV nearby. Seems like someone drove it up here and parked it near the runway, because it had full jerry cans and gear. It took like three seconds for us to say "Fuck, lets do this!" and to ride away with it. First time ever we were driving a vehicle in DayZ! We drove down to the crossroads between Vybor and Kabanino, where we stopped to take a look at the map. Suddenly shots were being fired from the south, and we went for cover. I was sure I'd be dead any second because I saw several bullets hit the ground right next to me, but I managed to get behind one of the trees at the crossroads. After a few seconds of silence, I scanned the area through my NV scope. There was a guy running down from Dichina towards a small bushline closer to us. It looked like he had the same FAL as I did, which was odd since the shots sounded more like an AK. I feared the worse, but this was the only clean target I got. My buddy was still behind cover and trying to get a view at our attacker. I watched the guy diving into the bushes and robbing back a few meters, the FAL already aimed in our direction. Since he was like 300m away, I shot once to see where the bullet would hit. Headshot, dead. I was reliefed but still very suspicious of other players lurking in the trees. We scanned the area as best as we could, and decided that this seemed to have been a crazy one-man army. I looted his corpse, only to find that he indeed hat the same FAL as I had, NV goggles, and some decent gear.

We drove on eastwards, circumnavigated Stary, and went to the location where our camp was on the other server. Much to our surprise, we found a tent not far away from our destination. It seemed to be an active camp, barbed wire everywhere and some good stuff in it too. We took some, but decided to leave the ATV as a compensation. Would love to see the face of the first guy coming back to check up the camp.

We felt pretty awesome when we logged after that. We still wonder about that ambush, though. By all means, we should be dead. We were standing around without any cover like dumb idiots. He hat NV goggles and the FAL AN/PVS-4 has a brutal zoom. The bullets I saw hitting the ground nearby should have hit my body, because in retrospect I am sure he saw me damn fine laying on the ground before I crouched behin the tree. Maybe he had some lags or something.

So this is my story I'd like to share with you about two guys who run around Chernarus without any plan whatsoever about what they're doing :)

Good story, would read again. I believe this is exactly how the game should be enjoyed, your adventures fit Dayz like a glove. With none of that shit about bandits, survivors, murderers and other terms that just sound ridiculous.

DayZ really confuses me sometimes... today I did a solo run again and went almost the same route my buddy and I took when we had our little episode. Heard a few shots and a vehicle once, but couldn't make out any players. Then, between Vybor and the Dichinia hill I spotted this:

wtffzkx9.jpg

Found my first L85 AWS (as you can see in the screenshot), but my login was kinda weird because all my kills had been reset. Also, I had an ALICE pack with me and picked up camo clothing at one of those helis. When the animation was finished, my backpack suddenly was a Coyote? I kid you not. I didn't pick up a coyote before, and I'm 90% sure there wasn't one at the heli either. Have been relogging a few times since to check out if its a server hickup, but I still have it. Very weird bug maybe? I read something about the ghillie suit bugs, but right now I'm not aware of camo clothing being bugged (well, not any more than the rest of DayZ).

Before I logged of I managed to run into a zombie horde, despite me checking out the area with the L85's thermal vision every 500 meters, so fail on my part as usual :)

Putting on camo clothing & ghillie suits are known to cause backpack glitches. I'm unsure by your wording in your post whether that "animation" was referring to putting on the camo, but I've had two separate friends put on ghillie suits with coyote backpacks, and their bags changed to ALICE packs after the suit was on.

Yeah, I meant the character animation of putting on the clothing. After it was finished, I noticed that my backpack had changed.

But thanks for the info, I'll be careful from now on with clothing in general :)

tl;dr

Cool story but REALLY it needs more dragons and shit

Well, tell me how to incorporate my Pathfinder campaign into DayZ and will follow your request immediately!
