Multiple Characters

Recommended Posts

So i got a question. I currently play the game exclusively with my best friend IRL, since having another player you can really rely on is somewhat of a luxury in this game and can really help with long-term survival.

The problem is, he doesn't have as much time to play as i do, and as a result, we only end up playing for a couple hours a day, and only a few days out of the week. While i greatly enjoy the time we spend playing together, i would really like to be able to make another character that i could use to play solo whenever he can't play with me.

However, i can't think of a way that this would be possible with the current way the game works. I love the fact that it is persistent, but i don't see how having more than 1 character would be a bad thing since you would have to find gear and whatnot for each character individually.

Does anyone know if there is a way to have 2 characters?

No, and it shouldn't allow you to in most cases. (Only exception I can see is two separate games from the same computer...)

Basically, I'd suggest you to organize your position with your friend when he logs in. We all have to do it. Take it as you going on scavenging missions on your own while your friend gets fat in the tent doing nothing!

Also minimize your time at the coast as that will give you both more headaches than reward as you will be violently ripped apart from each other time and time again.

Your online character seems to be linked to the installation key of your game. Due to this you won't be albe to create a second character unless you manage to buy and install a new version of Arma2:CO, which might be hard to do since windows will always realise that arma is already installed.

I hope this answers your question.

I think that isnt possible, because you got a unique ID from the gamekey.

Correct me when I´m wrong.

But I´ve got a question, too.

How to change the ingame nick? <--- Steamuser

That's something i really don't want to risk though. We've both been alive now for several days and have worked our way inland for a considerable distance. If i were to play by myself while he's away and i end up getting killed, then i would have to respawn and go get myself some more gear again, not to mention the extremely long run back to his position.

If that happened and i wasn't geared up and back to position by the next time he could play with me (which would be very unlikely if that ever happened) then that would just be time that i could have been playing with him, wasted.

Just go to your profile in the main menue and click on edit on your existing profile or create a new one. It will also allow you to customise your character within limitations (selection of different faces, glasses and the tone of your foice (not used in dayz though)).

Can anyone confirm that having 2 separate installation of the game works for having 2 separate characters? I'd rather not spend the extra 30 bucks and find out that it doesn't.

So spend $10 on OA, because that's what the key for Day-Z is actually taken from. You could switch back and forth with regedit .reg files, but you'd have to get the correct values by installing twice in the first place because the key values are encrypted.

I might give that a shot if all i need to buy is another OA copy. Has anyone else tried this and actually gotten it confirmed as a working way to do it? Or is this all just theory?

I would love this too for the exact same reasons; BUT the logistics of it are very hard.

You would end up having characters used a "banks" to safely store many guns and items ready to be dropped and picked up with new spawns.

On the other hand, creating a system where when one of your character drops an item and when you switch to another character your first character's items delete... would not work. You would have people instantly switching characters each time another player killed them... thus removing the reward from killing a survivor/bandit for the killer.

Honestly, who cares if people use "bank" characters to store weapons like that? In order to do that, you have to first go out and actually find the weapons and/or items in order to store them. That means that you must first take the necessary risk in order to obtain the items. It's not like you can just have an alt character with pre-stored weapons and ammo ready to go at a moment's notice.

If anyone were to have 2 characters, or 3, or 4, or however many, they would have to collect gear for each and every one of them individually, exactly the same as you would with only a single character. The time and effort is still required, you would just be able to get the burden of finding some starter gear out of the way all at once for each character, so if you died you'd have another ready to go with gear already.

Who cares if people want to use "mule" characters who they can use to get back into the fight faster? If someone wants to spend the incredible amount of time it would take to move multiple characters across the entire map one by one to keep them close to one another, why not let them? How does it harm you or anyone else?

One argument is that if that happened, then they could attack someone, and if they died, they could just get on an alt character and try again. Yeah maybe so, but the prep work required to put multiple characters in the proper position to stage an attack like that would take forever, and even then, it wouldn't be worth it if you ended up losing a character or 2, as those dead characters would then have to respawn with no gear and thus go through the entire process of regearing again, and then run back to where ever it is you are grouping your characters. The risk/reward just simply isn't worth it. Yeah you might end up killing your target with that setup, but the amount of time and effort lost in doing so would greatly outweigh whatever loot you might get out of it.

And for those reasons, i really don't see many people, if any really, making multiple characters for anything other than using them for different play styles. Sorry but i just don't see anyone running 5 characters across the entire map one by one after spending a few hours on each one getting gear, only to risk losing any one of those characters just so you can get a can of beans or some shit.
